Does it have drainage holes?

HarpieDuJour · 11/06/2024 15:22

The compost looks quite dry from what I can see, is it watered regularly? It could probably do with a feed anyway. And yes, do make sure it has proper drainage.

I'd put it in a terracotta pot with drainage holes (or just drill some holes in this pot if you don't want to move to terracotta) give it a good water with some feed added at the end and then put it somewhere where there's direct sunlight. Cactus and succulents need bright direct light.

I also use cactus and succulent soil for planting (relatively cheap, available on Amazon if you can't get to get a garden center).

This is an Easter or Christmas cactus (depending on when it is most popular) - they are mostly indestruCtable - I have some years old that seem to thrive on neglect.

Water very little and feed occasionally.

If potbound - replant in a bigger pot. with new compost
I have killed other houseplants - but I have not been able to do it for these.

Why false Christmas cactus? I very rarely water mine, only when in flower, then just a small amount. They have never been fed, just re potted about every 3 years proper cactus compost. When they Finnish flowering, they get put away in a greenhouse. I'm in the SE UK though, not Scotland. Yours looks very healthy.

That’s looking good and healthy. Keep doing what you’re doing (but make sure it has drainage holes)

The dark red colour is its reaction to the sun. Not a problem.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your cactus that a bit of water and liquid food won't fix. Mine is enormous and sits on a high stool in front a window so I can rotate it to get an even shape all round, as it has the most amazing show of pink flowers in December. The pinkish bits are the new growth. I water in a bit of liquid Growmore at this time, to help it recover after flowering.

Make sure there is adequate drainage, remove any dried up ends and water at least once a week if the cactus is moved into sunlight.
