What am I doing wrong with my hydrangeas?

Hello!

First off, I am a total gardening newbie but I am a new homeowner and it is my first time being responsible for a garden!

I planted this hydrangea in a 40cm diameter pot in ericaceous soil. It gets good sunlight throughout the day and I make sure I water it enough so that the soil is always damp.

Can anyone explain why the petals are a bit closing up? And is there a disease as some of the petals are browning and have holes in them 😭

Any advice is gratefully received! TIA x

Maybe it's getting too much sun? Mine do ok in east facing sun so early morning up till lunchtime and then shade in the afternoon. Gorgeous colour!

I dont think hydrangeas need ericacious soil - ive always planted mine in normal compost.

They need more water than you think ime

Your hydrangea is a lace cap variety, not a mop head variety; so you get a few full flowers round the edge & smaller ones in the middle. The good news is they're great for pollinators - mop head hydrangeas aren't.
They don't need ericascious soil unless you're trying to make the variety blue, which does need extra nutrients. But you need a specific feed to maintain a blue colour.
They do need lots of water & prefer moist soil with a bit of shade.
