Is there any hope for my sweetpeas?

I planted sweetpeas out on the allotment about 3-4 weeks ago and they seem to be stunted. They're not dead but stuck at about 4 or 5 inches. Is there anything I can do to spur them into growing?

Not sure if it's just the cold and rain. It's my first year on this particular plot but have grown them no issue before. We're south east.

In my experience sweet peas do this. They sit there, sulking, for a few weeks, while we gardeners wonder if they have given up.
Then suddenly, one day, you go to look at them, and they are a foot high and romping away.
Keep the faith.

i hope that will be the case with mine too!

Macramepotholder · 02/06/2024 09:07

@FuzzyPuffling I hope so! The forecast looks good this week.

Am hoping this is the case! Kind neighbour gave my some she had been growing. I planted them and they did nothing for weeks. Infact I thought a couple had died. There seems to be some upwards movement now but it is very slow.

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/06/2024 09:14

I would assume they’re busy sorting themselves out a decent root system

1ittlegreen · 02/06/2024 09:17

Mine are exactly the same, Monty said it should take them about 6 weeks.

EasilyDefined · 02/06/2024 09:20

Mine always do this too, I assume its a bit of transplant shock and them putting down roots.

Horseebooks · 02/06/2024 10:53

Yup mine have been out since early March and some are only just starting to take off. Others are starting to flower, but I think the later to get going the better they seem to do in the end.

Iggityziggety · 02/06/2024 11:05

Mine are the same, planted out in barrels and they haven't grown at all. I've heard they don't like being moved so hoping they'll perk up.

Macramepotholder · 02/06/2024 22:32

In good news I went to the allotment this evening and at least a few have some of the nice big leaves appearing so they might do something yet. Good luck to all with your sweetpeas!

Mine are looking stunted and sullen as well, I wondered if I'd done something wrong! Hopefully they will suddenly soar!

RaininSummer · 02/06/2024 23:04

Same here and also my tomatoes. It just isn't warm enough yet.

LemonTreeGrove · 02/06/2024 23:06

Are they definitely not dwarf sweet peas? They stay at that height.

Meadowtrees · 02/06/2024 23:12

Mine too! In fact all my plants seem to be doing it this year. The compost I’ve got seems particularly awful this year - like the contents of a hoover! I have wondered if this is part of it as it’s plants in the green house too.

JamMakingWannaBe · 02/06/2024 23:51

My zinnia seedlings stayed at 3 inches high for about a month. With the warmer weather these last couple of weeks they are about 4 inches. I thought they were quick growing!
As PP, the sweet peas are sulking since being planted out.

SeasideRock · 03/06/2024 09:32

Oh this is a relief! I thought I was the only one. I’ve been nurturing my seedlings indoors - planted them out last month and they have done nothing too. Fingers crossed…

FuzzyPuffling · 03/06/2024 10:46

These are mine today. The taller ones only took off a couple of weeks ago, and you can see there are still some sulkers.
Sheltered SW England.

Is there any hope for my sweetpeas?
Notthatcatagain · 03/06/2024 10:51

My mange tout are just the same, was on the point of pulling them up yesterday then noticed that some of them have a couple of pods. I shall reward this effort with a feed today and keep my fingers crossed

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 03/06/2024 11:07

I think that's just sweet peas doing their thing. Mine sulked for a few weeks but now look like the best sweet peas I've ever grown.

You could try giving them a boost with a liquid feed, I gave mine some comfrey tea and it seemed to do the trick.

I don't like my compost this year either. I've really struggled with my seedlings this year. It wasn't actually the one I ordered. They sent a different one but I couldn't be bothered to send it back so went with it.

Beebumble2 · 04/06/2024 10:47

My sweet peas are slow as well. I’ve been away for a week so hope they’ve got a move on, when I’m back.
They do like a lot of feeding so before I plant mine out I dig a trench and fill it with home made compost.

Macramepotholder · 04/06/2024 19:54

I gave them a feed on Sunday so hoping for some action this week. At least it's not just me having a rubbish year with seedlings.
