Failing Venus fly trap.

Is it possible to save this Venus fly trap? She was doing great but over the last few weeks all but these two traps have died. I did nothing differently than I have the last two years or so since I got her. Water only from the water butt.

she was a gift and has been doing so well. If anyone can offer any help I would be grateful!

Do you water from the bottom? Have you taken it out of the pot and looked at the soil/roots?

MagpiePi · 01/06/2024 07:44

Have they just reached the limit of their life spans? Or do they need some feed if they’ve been in the same compost for 2 years?

DaffydownClock · 01/06/2024 07:46

Mine’s just starting to grow again, I think they die back in the winter. Give it more time OP, keep it standing in rainwater in a bright spot. Don’t water from above.

Thanks all. I repotted last year. I pour water into the ceramic pot then stand the plant in it.

what am I looking for if I check the roots?

What did you repot it into? (Soil, I mean).

I lost mine last winter, but that was the real cold snap we had.

I got carnivorous plant compost from the garden centre near me that sells carnivorous plants. So hoping that was right!

By the way, that doesn’t look like a Venus Fly Trap, what’s left of it. It looks more like a Sarracenia, Pitcher Plant.

Ah it is a flytrap - it's just forlorn and the wee traps are right on the edge and difficult to see.

OK, with you, yes, agreed. Couldn't see them on the tablet. can see them on the screen of my desktop.

Mine likes being outside in a sunny but not too windy spot at this time of year, and I keep it permanently standing in about an inch of water from the butt.

LovelyDaaling · 01/06/2024 22:48

Maybe take the plant to your local garden centre - there's often an advice/help desk.

eddiemairswife · 01/06/2024 23:00

Perhaps you should find some flies for it.

TonTonMacoute · 02/06/2024 10:45

TBH I think you have done very well to have kept it that long, I have never had any success with Venus Fly Traps. Nepenthes or Sarracenia are much easier to look after.

I see it's on a window sill, but is it a sunny one, they do like lots of direct sun.

ElephantsDontReadFantasy · 02/06/2024 12:34

@TonTonMacoute sunniest windowsill in the house! South facing conservatory.

I've thinned the moss a bit today. I’m tempted to have a last chance saloon repot as I have some proper compost left. See if I can revive her!
