I say DA as I seem to get on well with his roses and got a few but open to others.Would like to grow a rose over a metal arch next year with either a clematis or honeysuckle.

What colours do you like?

I like a bit of contrast, so would probably choose an orange rose with a lilac clematis, as I find honeysuckle a bit unruly for an arch.

Prefer pink roses. Thanks for the tip about honeysuckle.

I have a rose arch with a large flowered white clematis ( I think it's "Wedding Day") on one side and DA "Mary Delaney" on the other. They seem very happy together!

The clematis flowers first so there's a bit of succession.

I absolutely love my pink James Galway climber - the flower is unbelievably pretty.

I planted this one two summers ago, it did well last summer, and at the moment is just covered with buds ready to burst. I have it mixed with a fairly bog standard honeysuckle for the scent.

I grow DA James Galway, with Clematis “the president”. Both very reliable in my garden and flowering at the same time.

Loving James Galway but it’s not on the list of recommended on DA for an arch and I’ve read some where that it’s very upright. I’ve got Mary Delaney against a fence. Now wondering if I could move her to the arch and put a James Galway along the fence. Or I could put another Mary Delaney up the arch but it’s nice to have something different.I quite like Lady if the Lake but not sure what clematis would go with that.

Zephirine Drouhin is a lovely climbing rose with a heavenly scent. Honeysuckle is great for attracting moths, but it will romp away if not kept in check. Wisteria is lovely and easy train.

I’ve got Generous Gardener, which is a good climber and smells lovely. Ghislaine de feligonde is also really good as is Phyllis Bide.

Have got Generous Gardener over our pergola with wisteria. Think she’s my favourite, so well behaved but maybe too big for an arch.Got Gertrude Jekyll up an obelisk and she’s my most troublesome( thorny and black spot now and again). Have Albrighton over the shed and New Dawn over a fence. Olivia in a bed. They have all done so well and need so little other than a couple of feeds and a prune. Hence wanting another one. We’re on clay so going with what works!

Will look at those other recommendations.

I don’t like how DA change their mind about what roses work best for what! I swear, when I bought James Galway it was recommended for arches, but it does indeed have a very upright habit.

I also have a Strawberry Hill, which was recommended for growing as a shrub at the time, with the possibility of growing it as a very short climber for those who really wanted to give that a try.. fortunately that’s exactly what I had in mind, as mine is now a 3.5 meter high climber! The last time I checked their website, it had been upgraded to climber status. Strawberry Hill would make a lovely rose for an arch. It has the most beautiful fragrance. Subtle, but beautiful.

Ooo will look at Stawberry Hill. YY re David Austin changing advice. They’ve retired Shropshire Lad. Quite like the look of that too.

My favourite DA is "Eustacia Vye". Not a climber ( I have her in a pot) but beautiful and smells gorgeous too.
