Google Lens (which I don't trust but use as a preliminary indicator) suggested this was ground elder. I am terrible at identification by leaf but I think the app is talking nonsense.

However I dug it out to be safe and got rid. So it's probably something beautiful instead? (Though definitely not something I've planted).

Any ideas?

I'm hopeless at this, but it almost looks like a spud to me?

Picture This says elder.

I agree with elder. They do this so that you think "Oh, that looks interesting, I'll nurture it" and before you know it you've got a fucking great elder growing where you don't want it and the bigger they get the harder they are to get rid of.

Ah - Elder makes a lot of sense as we have quite a few of those just behind this border. Glad I dug it out then. Relieved it's not ground elder. Between hogsweed, mares tail, creeping buttercup, willowherb lady's mantle (yes I know technically not a weed but it bloody is here), docks, nettles, possibly couch grass, raspberries, etc etc I have enough invasive weeds to be getting on with.

(I do also have ground elder but thankfully in a part of the garden where it doesn't cause any problems).

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for the recommendation @MereDintofPandiculation, my attention to detail is sometimes a bit lacking which is one of the reasons I am so hopeless, but will look up the book as I do really need to learn.
