Growing veg. Only have a patio.

I really want to start veg gardening next year. I am really limited on space so the only place I have is on a patio. I love the vego bed type of planters and they would be good for the shape I had in mind

is this doable. How tall would I need to have it realistically. I am happy to have a few of them to put veg next to each other that need the room to grow sideways. But was worrying about the depth.

I wanted to do things like tomatoe , chilli’s corgettes

I have a chilli plant in a pot with huge chillis on it atm, the pot is only around 25cm tall.
In the past I have successfully grown beetroot, lettuce and potatoes in pots/planters. Tomatoes grow happily in grow bags, so don’t need much depth.
courgettes Choose a pot with drainage holes as courgettes prefer a moist but well-drained soil. Each plant will need a pot that is at least 45 cm high and 45 cm wide to thrive. Smaller containers can be used, but the plant may not reach its full potential and produce fewer harvestable fruits.

Have a look at square foot gardening websites, they would be ideal for what you want to do

I grow all the following in pots.

French beans
Broad beans
Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Courgettes
spring onions
lettuce
radish
rocket
chillis
Squash
Figs
Peaches

Apart from the fruit trees, none of the pots is more than 30cm deep.
After work, I wander round my pots with a glass of wine & a watering can. It's very relaxing. Elsewhere in the garden, I have a clump of rhubarb behind the garage and some artichokes in the front flower bed. 🙂

Add to @Meadowfinch’s list
Swiss chard
beetroot
Asturian tree cabbage
Purple sprouting
Kale
Magentaspreen.
straw berries
runner beans
climbing french beans
sugar snap peas

Most of my pots are 30cm deep, but I do use the biggest pot I can find for courgettes.

This is really helpful. So basically I don’t need something that is hugely deep. This is brilliant. Made me very happy.

I grow all of my vegetables in pots on my patio. I use large plastic pots from B&M for things like courgettes, pumpkins and my dwarf apple tree. For most of my other vegetables I use those reusable bags designed for growing potatoes in as they are very cheap. I grow tomatoes, dwarf french beans, Jerusalem artichokes (and potatoes) in them every year very successfully.

I also have one of those plastic mini greenhouses for starting off my seeds and I keep my chillis in there permanently as I found they did better with the extra warmth and protection. I think it cost me about £20 from Aldi 5 years ago and is still going strong.
