Could anyone recommend flowers that naturally spread? Forget me nots? Any others?

Erigeron, trailing geranium.

Hohofortherobbers · 23/05/2024 19:55

Aubretia

Grotbagg · 23/05/2024 19:59

I have violets in the dark areas of my garden. They are very invasive but I keep them under control and they are pretty when in flower

Sageyboots · 23/05/2024 20:02

borage… but once you’ve got it you’ll never get rid of it
Californian poppy

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 23/05/2024 20:07

Far be it from me to contradict @MereDintofPandiculation but I believe erigeron karvinskianus (which is the one I grow) is a perennial, not an annual. It wouldn't be quite so welcome in my garden if it didn't come back every year 😆

LuluBlakey1 · 23/05/2024 20:07

Our garden is full of bluebells. Every couple of years I remove hundreds of bulbs - over 400 2 years ago- and the few I leave just reproduce again.
I love Valerian but it does self seed all over
Yes to Verbena Bonariensis- and you can carefully just pull up seedlings, stuff them into pots and give them to friends. It's beautiful.
Angelicas- just let them get on with it. They are lovely.
Erigeron
Teasels- goldfinches love the seed heads
Crocosmia- particularly the large bright red 'Lucifer'
Rose Campion
Irises clump up and can be split
Thyme-we have a clump about 30cm in diameter from a tiny pot planted 2 years ago
Bergamot- I grew 3 small plants, put them in a big pot and they have filled it up.
Perennial cornflowers- beautiful dark, purpley-blue and they bulk up and self-seed. I give lots away to friends
Japanese anemone- but you might regret it- better in a large pot.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 23/05/2024 20:09

Teasels are lovely but they can grow huge and they will cut you to shreds if you aren't careful

BooseysMom · 23/05/2024 20:11

We've got problem soil.. basically heavy clay which is boggy and muddy when it rains and baked like concrete in dry weather. Nothing survives except grass, dandelions and clover. I have tried sowing yellow rattle to try and kill off the grass but the seeds didn't germinate.
I planted water mint around the pond and am
hoping this spreads but think it might be killed off in the summer as it needs damp ground

Yes - I've certainly got some that survive the winter. But they self seed as well so they work either way!Grin

Foxgloves, Welsh Poppies, ground ivy, wild violets, London Pride, campanula, calendula, cornflowers all do well in my garden.

yodaforpresident · 23/05/2024 20:15

Verbena, echinacea, poppies, ox-eye daisies, cerinthe, California poppy, marigolds, erigeron, euphorbia, lady’s mantle

TheDogIsInCharge · 23/05/2024 20:22

Noshferatu · 23/05/2024 13:14

My current big love - Erigeron! It’s decorating so many ugly places for me. It’s like a pound shop gypsophilia in a way, blowsy with discreet leaves. the daisies start white and then turn pink. You’ll never be without it but it’s easy to tweak out if it’s in the wrong place.

ooh never heard of this. Sounds fab. Off to google.

I like vinca, hardy geraniums, bee jasmine for trellis/wall cover, trifolia rubens, common thyme

ooh yes wild violets. They come up all over my front garden in spring. So, so pretty

Oldernotwiser44 · 23/05/2024 20:26

Erinus alpinus (fairy foxglove) are beautiful. Fairy foxgloves will grow in cracks in paving/walls- absolutely stunning and self seeds easily.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 23/05/2024 20:32

Poached egg plant and calendula are regular returners in my garden. Have a ton of yellow poppies and wild violets that I never planted, but love.

Also slightly worried about the woodruff I was gifted last year after reading this!

Peggysue14 · 23/05/2024 20:43

Cerinthe
Phacelia
Verbena bonariensis
foxgloves

Yes, you're right, it's perennial. Sorry!

viques · 23/05/2024 21:54

Cyclamen. Slow but sure.

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/05/2024 10:36

There’s two definitions for “naturally spread” being used in this thread 1) things that stay in nice compact clumps but self seed readily, eg Nigella, Cerinthe, Verbena bonarensis, foxgloves 2) things that don’t necessarily self seed but expand to cover a lot of ground, eg Nepeta, Ajuga, Vinca, jasmine, thyme

olderbutwiser · 24/05/2024 10:57

It does depend on your garden. I can’t get Mexican Flebane to take in the garden, although it infests the crack between the tarmac and the wall at the front of the house. Centura and Alchemilla Mollis are unstoppable (and very welcome). I will never get rid of the Japanese anenomes however hard I try.

Floralnomad · 24/05/2024 10:59

Hardy geraniums , spread like wildfire and even my husbands black thumb doesn’t kill them

SickOfSteppingInCatShite · 24/05/2024 11:10

Wild Geraniums, Campanula, ivy, rockery plants....

SickOfSteppingInCatShite · 24/05/2024 11:20

Recommendations for cat deterrents please. Have numerous wildlife-killing cats left out in neighbouring property and trying to find a deterrent that is actually inaudible to human ears.
Apparently their cats can crap everywhere, rip up nests, kill birds, nestlings & fledglings, but if you try to stop it environmental health are on your doorstep!!! Be grateful for any suggestions, short of a potato gun...

Also, surely if cat owners are petitioning for more rights (so that dogs can't just kill their cats without prosecution, or people have to stop after running them over - as with dogs etc), then it's high time the ridiculous law about cats having freedom to roam and a legal right to enter other people's properties, was gone!? and now they're microchipped make all owners responsible for their pets' actions! Our British wildlife is in serious decline because of these irresponsible cat owners!!! and half the idiots here are putting feeders up to lure the birds in for their cats to catch them!!! We are devastated over the recent loss of our Robin nest and the 10 day old nestlings 🙄

ErrolTheDragon · 24/05/2024 12:13

I'm not sure it belongs on this thread but I've found imitating Rambo with a supersoaker sends the desired message to neighbourhood cats. Damages nothing but their dignity.

100% in agreement. We need an uprising.
To save my garden and birds, I use a Nerf gun water pistol. It's Nerf or nothing!
