Chelsea thoughts?

I enjoy the annual coverage, watching trends develop, seeing new plants and planting combinations.

Although I understand austerity is the reason, radical reduction in the number of show gardens is a shame as a viewer. I love to see them.

I particularly like the timber benches and masses of colour in The Octavia Hill Garden. The garden built to handle floods and heavy rains was another very striking idea.

Anyone else’s impressions? Any lucky souls visiting it?

@2Rebecca the trees go in containerised or rootballed and come out the same way, so they still have all their roots.
I've been working there this week and every time I saw Monty he looked miserable. Joe Swift looked like he was really enjoying himself!

I do worry about the trees at Chelsea. Trees have large roots. Are these trees just disposed of after Chelsea as their roots have been destroyed to transport them?

They are grown in containers for the purpose of being able to be moved, whether as part of a show garden or for a mature tree in a new garden. Their root balls are undisturbed.

They settle happily in a new place as long as watered and cared for properly. I’ve seen plenty in relocated gardens, thriving.

I’d rather watch Monty’s slight grumpiness than the programme earlier in the day with Nicki Chapman and Angelica someone, that really is the epitome of fluffy and lightweight.

Agree. I watched the first one with the 2 women and wondered why they couldn't find any knowledgeable women. It was all froth.

I went, and by the end of it I was shouting OH ANOTHER GEUM every five minutes.

big dragon was epic and hilarious, but agree that there was a LOT of sameyness in the planting. I wanted to go and see mad shit not ‘oh yeah that looks like a perfect version of my xyz’.

the ‘Italian holiday’ stand with the fake rain dripping off the veranda was great I thought. And I enjoyed being schooled on what forest bathing was by the youth I was with, I also thought it was a swim.

and the people watching was superb, especially when they brought Jo Wiley on. Would go again I think, and I agree that it was more about picking out little bits rather than being particularly wowed by the gardens.
