Iv just bought a baby Japanese maple tree in a pot it's just 2ft high like a little sapling, my garden is south facing and gets sun all day from around 11am it comes over house until about 8pm it goes behind the house behind mine, the side of my garden I shaded most the day by next doors trees so am I best putting it on that side out the sun? Iv Been reading they need shade so sun rays don't scorch them any advice would be great thanks x

Out of the wind is the most important. Also keep an eye on it drying out. Check the roots and if they have filled out the pot it's time to repot it into a larger pot.

I find mine do best in the shade - the sun can bleach them and dry them out to much.

That's interesting. Mine's been in full sun for a few years and does ok but I might think of moving it as need a tree for shade (it's also in a pot)

Which variety? Some are happier in sun than others.

If you do need to re-pot (i.e. if the roots are filling current pot, which they probably aren't given the size you describe), then only go up on pot size.

Iv put it in corner between my patio doors and next doors fence so it's shaded literally all day except maybe an hour when the sun first comes over I'm gonna get a bigger pot for it to keep it growing and watered rill it gets bigger it's just a twig at the minute but will get a pot twice size its came in

As per my post above, do not do this. 'One size up' only (perhaps an inch bigger in diameter maximum).

Is it Butterfly?

Lots of things are Acers. I was after the variety, which is Taylor. Different varieties need different conditions.

Taylor is good for sun (not too strong) and light shade.

Even Sycamore is an Acer.

@Jowillo27

Acer = maple.
Acer palmatum = Japanese maple.
Acer palmatum 'Taylor' = your variety as per the label.

@MuscariFan You are right, it does look just like Butterfly, but Taylor has the pink tinged bits as well. I think it may have been bred from Butterfly. There's thousands of varieties out there to perplex us.
Confused

Be prepared to wait for them to grow. They take years so don't take it personally!! 😘
