Peace Lillies struggling after repot - please help!

Hello please help me save these peace lillies, I bought them when I was grieving a loss two years ago.

I’ve had them 2 years in the small 11cm pots they came in. I thought it was time to repot and did this on a sunny day outside a week and a half ago, left them outside from lunchtime to evening. I’m not a seasoned gardener and just followed the gardening shop lady’s advice. Put gravel at the bottom for drainage, half filled it with soil, put in the peace lilies and then topped up. I watered it and left it outside. The wilting didn’t bother me as I’m used to them doing that but it’s been a week and a half now. I did water them too much and emptied the water from the tray on Monday and left them outside a couple of hours to drain a bit.

I’m reading advice online about what I may have done wrong.

The soil is still a little damp, should I replace the soil and keep them in these large pots?

Have I “overpotted”? I have lots of little pots I could put them into, and there’s three separate peace lilies in each large pot. I didn’t wash the roots when I took them out just used my hands to gently break the old soil away. In the new pot I filled it with a shovel and didn’t push down the soil to compress, should I have done that?

Or is this just part of repotting peace lilies and I should leave them be and not cause them more upset? Perhaps it’s just a hangover from too much sunshine when I first repotted them?

I’ve included three photos I took the morning before I repotted them. This is the soil I bought, I went to a local gardening shop. www.wickes.co.uk/Miracle-Gro-Peat-Free-All-purpose-Compost---50L/p/292844

I’m a bit gutted that after years of low maintenance and them thriving it’s come to this.

I'm not an expert but I'd think they might just need some more time to recover. Definitely keep them in the shade and maybe keep them in a cool room as well. You might find the leaves die back but it sends out new leaves once it's settled.

Have they been sitting in water for a week or so? It's probably that. Let them dry out fully and they'll probably spring back!

(I'm a big fan of house plants but not an expert, just years of experience!)

Edited to add: almost all house plants HATE sitting in water, so if you ever over-water them, pour out the water that same day!

Hi there. Peace lillies do not like being re potted. I re potted a couple a couple of years ago. One survived one didn't. A friend of mine also re potted a big one, hers didn't survive. You also said you did them outside on a sunny day and left them there. They hate sun, mine are in a north facing bathroom and hall with no window. I put polystyrene chunks in the bottom of all my plants, inside and out. The peace lilly only requires watering when it's dry.

Nannyfannybanny · 17/05/2024 14:53

They also wouldn't like being left outside for hours. They are quite temperamental,as I said, they don't like sun, but they're fussy about drafts and temperature changes.

I left them in the shade outside so they could drain on a sunny day, I’m aware of peace lillies preferences they’re usually inside and rarely watered, often misted.

I’m asking what I should do now to help them? Should I repot again and not water the soil? Or just wait and see?

I personally would now just let them dry out for a week or two and not do anything to them. But the previous poster seems more experienced with peace lilies.

Nannyfannybanny · 17/05/2024 16:50

No, don't pot them again. They really don't like it. You have potted them on, which stresses them, put them outside, presumably it's a lot cooler than indoors, over watered them. I wouldn't do anything else, put them somewhere cool and shady indoors, but I would be surprised if they are ok

SaveOurSucculents · 17/05/2024 17:00

Ok thank you. I repotted them on a day with no breeze when it was same as indoor temperature so I’ll stay hopeful but prepared for the worst.

I would out them back in the location they were in previous, forget about them for a good few weeks/ months.

My most impressive house plants are the ones that I water a few times a year and forget about. I'm a bugger for neglecting them over the summer when I'm just interested in the garden. 😁

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst🤣

I re-potted mine and thought I had killed it. It really doesn't like the sun. I put it in a shady spot in the living room, away from heat sources and it has recovered and is thriving. It doesn't like overwatering but it does like a little bit of tomato feed. It has just produced a perfect flower.

Nannyfannybanny · 18/05/2024 08:03

You were lucky! Peace lillies don't "flower", they have spathes which are modified leaves. I have 2 smaller ones which I have left in their small pots,im not risking it. The big one I attempted to re pot was years old. The are very good for the indoor environment. They absorb toxins and pollutants from the air.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/05/2024 10:30

It does flower! The “spadix” or spike, is made up of many tiny flowers.

Well whatever it is called it is beautiful and looks like a flower to me.

Huh, I’ve always thought of peace lilies as pretty easygoing. I water it when it droops. Cut leaves off when they go brown and crispy. Divide it into two pots when it gets enormous. Give it a bit of baby bio a couple of times a year.

I would just leave yours now, let it recover.
