Plants for poor shallow soil

hello,
I’ve got a trellis along one of my boarders, mainly so when the plants grow we don’t have to look at the bins

problem is the soil on the outer side is shallow and poor quality. But obviously not bad enough that weeds won’t grow. I’m thinking of planting a load of lavender along there to reduce weed growth. We’ve already got a few lavender plants which I love. But is there anything else I should consider for variety or likes rubbish conditions more than lavender

Hardy geraniums will grow anywhere.

Most Mediterranean herbs are happy in poor soil with full sun.
Our front garden is south facing with very shallow crap soil - we have lavender, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, sage, lupins, spring bulbs (daffodils, bluebells, muscari, allium, snow drops).

Erigeron would look lovely there

Herbs are your friend. Thyme lavender and rosemary for bushy look or mint, lemon balm and marjoram for leafy look.

If you want something tall to hide the bins,Nepeta (catmint) Three Hill Giant. There's are quite a few ornamental grass varieties that would fit the bill. We don't know if there's full sun. If the soil isn't very deep, you would have a problem with large bulbs like daffodils which have to be planted at a depth of 3 times their size.m

I have anemanthele lessoniana (pheasant’s tail) ornamental grass in the very shallow, sandy, north east facing front garden around my bay window. It is quick growing and looks lush, evergreen with bronze/red shades in the winter. I planted small plants last year and have ignored it ever since.

If it’s in full sun then Miscanthus giganteus would work, they grow very tall and are almost bamboo like, but without being invasive. But it dies back in winter. https://www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/miscanthus-giganteus-eco-grass/classid.2000046657/
