Self propelled mower - tricky to use?

Current petrol mower is coming to the end of its life and I need to replace it. I’m not getting any younger and pushing that around is bloody hard work, so I’ve been looking at self propelled.
DH seems to think it will run away with me and I’ll never turn it. I think he just wants to buy another cheap, crap mower. As it’s me who does the lawns I shall absolutely be having final say here, but I’m interested to know others experiences.

thanks.

Best investment you could make! Mine has two handles so you can stop the propelling without stopping the engine so you can turn.

They're really, really easy. It's just like walking up and down the garden - no effort at all. It can't "run away with you" as you have to hold both handles to make it work. And they're really not fast!

Turning is easy too. I think I have got into the habit of letting go of the "drive" handle for any tricky or tight turns but generally it's easy enough to tip it onto the back wheels briefly to turn it.

I've no idea what your DH is on about!

Get a robot lawnmower!

beetr00 · 13/05/2024 23:02

as @Pastlast says one of these are what you need

Unfortunately due to the layout of the land a robot won’t work for me.

Good to know though. I had figured merely letting go would stop the thing but he seems to think I’ll be dragged across the garden 🙄
I do suspect it’s more to do with him wanting to just buy a cheap one, and when he does the gardens he can absolutely do that, but I need to make my life a bit easier now and this appears to be the best solution.

I shall go shopping tomorrow! Thanks all.

We have a petrol self-propelled lawnmower. We both take turns doing the lawn and my wife who is only 5' 2" has no problem with it at all when she does it. If you do get one, get a mulching one as it saves emptying and disposing of the cuttings and they just get reabsorbed back into the soil.

That was the other of my main requirements! Mulching and self propelled.

if anyone has any recommendations I’m all ears❤️

My Dad has one and it’s my favourite mower of all time!

Ours is a Cobra. I don't know exactly which model off the top of my head but think it's this one : Cobra M51SPC 20" Petrol Powered Lawnmower (cobragarden.co.uk). We've had it a few years and it's been brilliant.

I have a John Deere which until this weekend was very reliable. The self propelling is great, but can surprise you when you first start! Get as wide a cutting deck as you can afford.

Coffeesnob11 · 13/05/2024 23:33

I really didn't like the self propelled bit of my lawnmower. It either went too fast or too slowly. I much prefer a cheap electric one!

HighOnMaiden · 22/05/2024 22:33

Ok so I bought myself a MacAllister self propelled from B&Q. I have a few of their cordless tools and they have been pretty robust for me. Managed to get some reward points converted into a £75 voucher, take my mother in law on pensioner discount Wednesday AND sell the old mower, meaning my new, fancy one cost around £50. Bargain.

I had chance to use it earlier in the week before the rain returned and I absolutely love it. Made life so much easier. Even DH admitted it was nice to use.
obviously now I want to mow the back it’s tipping it down.

This is not a joke or a lie - it really did used to happen.

My neighbour used to tie his petrol lawn mower to the washing line & let it go round in circles whilst he kept an eye from his doorstep. Once it had finished, he'd just do the corners & job done.

You had to see it to believe it... it was like something from a cartoon - I loved watching it as a child.
