Plants that don't need direct sunlight

I have an area in my garden with a small raised border that is up against a wall and gets absolutely no direct sunlight. What could I plant there that would survive? Thanks

I used to have a very shady garden and some things that did well were ferns, heucheras, foxgloves and hostas.

Read up on the RHS website the different definitions of partial shade, full shade, deep shade and see what applies - many things will grow but not be amazing in shade unless it is very deep.

I like the Gardener's World plant finder, you can select the light conditions.

I previously got some great shade plants from Beth Chatto - again there is a light conditions filter.

Fuchsias don't need a lot of light, also Nicotiana which are annuals you can sow.

A hosta would look lovely and some roses will work, but won't be as prevalent as in the sun

Some japanese maples do better with no direct sunlight. I'm about to build a raised bed in a similar place, and in preparation have put a number of plants where it will be (that way I can move them if they utterly hate it. Heucheras are doing very well, also astilbes, a variegated molinia, and I am planing to get some hakonechloa. I'm trying out some hydrangeas and rhododendrons as well but it might be too dark, not yet sure.

Begonia
Epimedium
pansy/viola
Brunnera
Fern
Hellebore
Geranium

Polemonium
pulmonaria
many many types of ferns, I have a shady raised bed like you describe and my ferns are thriving in it. It’s great to have a variety together in different shapes, shades and sizes. Eg Dryopteris cristata with polystichum plumodensum, athyriums, asplenium, cyrtomium
pheasants grass
astilbe, very easy to grow from corms, inexpensive from supermarkets
fatsia japonica does well in the shade
many Japanese acers
vinca minor or variegated ivy as ground cover
only plant hostas if you have a strategy for dealing with slugs and snails

I have
Hellebore
Heuchera
Tiarella
phlox
roses
pulmonarias
primroses
hostas
Antirrhinums (annuals but self-seed)
pheasant berry bush
lilac
All growing in a bed that gets no sun at all.

I have a few hostas which are shade loving. Climbing hydrangeas also like shade apparently if you want something up the wall
