Recommendations for bathroom plants

Rescue2024 · 02/05/2024 11:55

I have written a list of recommended bathroom plants and I’d like some thoughts on which ones would be really low key caring for from people that know about plants, as I know nothing!

I want a large pot on the bathroom floor and then some smaller ones on the window ledge that trail down so they don’t mess with the blinds.

spider plant
boston fern
aloe Vera
bamboo
ferns
ast iron
zz
pothos
jade
begonia
calathea
lucky bamboo
philodendron
fittonia
air - apparently these don’t need soil?
lipstick
chinese evergreen
rattlesnake
dieffenbachia
nerve
staghorn fern
schefflera
tradescantia
monstera
african violet

Water lily in the bath?

For the big floor-standing one, I'd get a ficus benjamina or another ficus (rubber plant), there are different varieties.

Steer clear of ferns, they are a pain in the whatsit and can be very fussy.

How much light does your bathroom get? If you have a south-facing window, the plants that would be suitable would be very different than if it's north-facing.

Ha! I didn’t think of that! 😀

Be aware that houseplants nearly always come with small flies. You may not like them landing on you when you get out of the bath

( I have two biggish plants in the cloakroom, but none in the shower, since DH lashed out when something landed on him, and broke the soap dish)

Yes, I couldn't keep any ferns going in my north-facing bathroom, despite having them on the windowsill or a huge window. I've reverted to succulents.

I’ve got a devil’s ivy that’s done really well in the bathroom, and I’m not particularly conscientious.

I have a Boston Fern and I haven't killed it yet 😂 I keep mine in my dining room but I mist it often; they love bathrooms apparently and are low maintenance.

skilpadde · 02/05/2024 17:39

With a south-facing bathroom I, like @BirdsofAmerica, would go for succulents. Low maintenance, very forgiving of strong sun in summer and cold temperatures or draughts in winter (just massively dial down the watering in winter).

Spider plants are easy, but would cook in a south-facing window. I have a Boston fern that loves the humidity of the bathroom but it too won’t like a lot of direct light.

Calatheas - don’t go there - they’re total drama queens that decide to keel over at the first sign of less than perfect conditions. I have a few, but my house is old, cold, and draughty, and it’s a battle keeping them alive over the winter.

I have two glorious Transcandentia Nanouk in my south west facing bathroom window.
They are achingly trendy in macrame holders!
I bought a fairly small plant, took cuttings and they have really done well.
We have tiny purple flowers this week.

Little vases with air plants

GoingOutShoes · 02/05/2024 20:19

I have shells with air plants tucked in. Mist in summer but in winter the steam from the shower should suffice.

Rescue2024 · 02/05/2024 21:40

Thank you for all the ideas, I have a nice new list to look at
starting with succulents and very interested in the macrame holders

I really dislike indoor plants ( long story , my Mum was/is a hoarder and one of her hoarding obsessions was indoor plants -so now they give me the heave)
Outdoor plants I love !

But for an indoor - Devils Ivy is beautiful , lovely shaped trailing leaves

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/05/2024 21:48

I've got an asparagus fern which I got for £4 in B&Q ages ago and it seems to love the bathroom. I water it once a week and have put it into a bigger pot which I think it liked as it grew loads bigger!

yes, depends very much on light.

I cheated (goes to the naughty step) and got a few false cacti in gorgeous pottery pots, and they are perfect as an arrangement on the windowsill. No watering, no maintenance, no flies. Sometimes these kind of things actually work.

I have a garden border full of stuff so I am not a plant heathen really.
