I was given this by a friend last year. She wasn't totally sure what it was so I quarantined it in a pot and it now looks like this. What is it?

Ipheion?

CatherinedeBourgh · 18/04/2024 18:11

Never seen them with the green stripes, but the shape of the flower is just like it.

CatherinedeBourgh · 18/04/2024 18:15

Actually hadn't noticed that the flowers are in clusters, not ipheion then. Do they droop down?

Peanutbutterandmarmalade64 · 18/04/2024 18:15

Looks like Puschkinia to me, Russian Snowdrop

takemeawayagain · 18/04/2024 18:18

Isn't that three cornered leek? If so I think it's quite invasive.

They droop down.
I'm trying to upload another photo but the technology is defeating me. Even though I only did the other photos 10 minutes ago! The phone is now suggesting three cornered leek.

The stem has three corners.😱

I think so too - otherwise known as wild garlic. It is edible.

RHS website says:
"This plant is listed on Schedule 9 of the UK Wildlife & Countryside Act as an invasive non-native species. Although not banned from sale, it is an offence to plant or cause these to grow in the wild IN ENGLAND WALES, NORTHERN IRELAND and the REPUBLIC OF IRELAND. Gardeners possessing them should undertake measures to control them."

Gulp. I think it's going in the bin.

I think it might be wild garlic, crush a bit of leaf and sniff

I'm not absolutely sure you are allowed to put it in the bin if your rubbish goes to land fill

Well according to my phone it’s three cornered leek/garlic, the pictures of that plant seem to match yours.

Btw, If you tap and hold on a photo with an iPhone, it highlights the object and runs a search, seems pretty accurate. Have identified many plants this way just recently.

My plot neighbours have this on their allotment, it’s really pretty when it’s in bloom and it tastes good too but yes, perhaps keep it in a pot 😂😂

It is really pretty. It's a shame to get rid of it but I won't even keep it in a pot because it spreads by seed as well as bulbils.

Eat it. Three cornered leek makes a tasty pesto and you ate doing your civic duty at the same time

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/04/2024 19:16

I have a free app called 'seek' where you can take a photo of a plant, bird or possibly car (not really) and using your photo it said it is a 'three cornered garlic'

(Disclaimer: Other plant identifier apps are available)

Not wild garlic which has wide leaves, three cornered leek which is also an Allium, with the same onion/garlic smell to the leaves.

How do you know it’s accurate if you don’t already know what the plant is?

@MereDintofPandiculation

You look at what the search brings up, and look at various photos and descriptions of the plant and see if it matches what you’ve spotted. Fairly simple really.

MaxandMeg · 18/04/2024 19:57

Those plant ID sites often come up with ridiculous results. Don't rely on them. Not wild garlic - three-cornered leek. Invasive.

Lonelycrab · 18/04/2024 20:00

@MereDintofPandiculation

Cherry laurel is what my phone made of this:

Looks like the Google images of cherry laurel to me…

@biser - I've spent over 20 years trying to eradicate that from my garden! It's a thankless task and I've found more today coming under the fence from a neighbours garden. I've never come across any other bulb which spreads at such a rate! You are very wise not to plant it!

Lonelycrab · 18/04/2024 20:35

@MereDintofPandiculation another one I’ve managed to identify from a pic I took. British soldier lichen. It’s an accurate identification wouldn’t you say? This function really helps utterly clueless gardeners like meSmile

Yes you're right, I had a look at it in the park earlier, the leaves are wrong
