Overgrown shrubs

Hi
Our garden is side on to a tree /shrub area that I believe belongs to the local council.
we desperately need the garden fence replacing but cannot get access due to the big shrubs. I’ve looked on the council website to see about reporting it but can only find where the bushes are blocking a road or path which they don’t.
any advice where I go from here ?

Are they growing over the fence onto your side? If so you’re allowed to prune them back to fence level. Presumably you should then be able to replace the fence from your side? Or do you need access from both sides for some reason?

Phone the council. Someone there should know. Good advice already given in boundaries.

Not growing over edge of fence just really thick dense shrubs right upto the fence. Just not sure if a it could be done from one side ?

Wrong time of year I'm afraid - this sort of major pruning shouldn't be done at this time of year as it is an offence to disturb nesting birds. Work like this shouldn't be carried out between March and August.

It will likely come under parks department of the council - whoever manages parks etc. but yes wrong time of year I suspect.

Thank you. I will have a look again at their website and see if I can find some more information

I think a new fence can certainly be put in from your side but it will be need to be done with the posts towards the council side and the slats/planks (the “good” side of the fence) towards you. I imagine the council will be fine with this as it’s you paying for it…

Thank you. Yeah I would like the posts on my side as that’s what the other fence is like so think it would look odd

Oh I see, hadn’t realised it was just one bit needing replacing. Yes if you want the posts towards you then that will need to be done from the other side.

Given the way it faces I suspect it may be the council’s fence so arguably their responsibility to replace any broken bits? Not sure if this helps exactly but it might mean you can speak to a different team at the council?!

Yamadori · 18/04/2024 17:47

A lot of councils won't have a parks department, but they most likely have a tree officer. Maybe try them, because if it isn't their responsibility, they should know whose it is.

Or you could contact your local Councillor. They’re especially keen to help at this time of year.
