Filling in a deepish pathway.

I’m getting rid of a straight pathway in my garden - it’s recessed - either side is about 25 cm higher than the path. The path is about 8 metres long and 70cm wide. How do I fill it in - all soil? A layer of hardcore, sand?
the soil on with side is light, feels good quality if that matters? When it’s filled in I’ll be treating a winding pathway - grass with stepping stones.

Can you fill in the recess with the soil you dig out for the new, winding path? That probably won't be enough though, by the sounds of it. You could buy in some top soil - if my calculation is correct* you'd need:

8m × 0.7m × 0.25m = 1.5 cubic metres

*maths is not my strong point so check this Confused

@Curtainsforus What is the existing path made of?

Curtainsforus · 17/04/2024 15:33

The existing path is made of concrete slabs on soil I think.
We will have some soil to move from another bed. I have bed/path/lawn arrangement. I'm thinking I will smooth the soil from the bed across the path and then put top-soil across the top to level off to the height of the grass.
I thought I might need hard core for drainage but I don't have clay soil so I don't think drainage is an issue.
