Are there any nice (for animals/ insects) bushes that only grow to about two metres?

I'm fed up with capping trees and I want some privacy.. not hedging, just something at the boundary

Buddleia. ,otherwise known as the butterfly bush.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 16/04/2024 15:44

Hypericum (different varieties grow to different heights, so choose carefully). Evergreen, so year round privacy and cover for birds, and lots of lovely big flowers for bees for a good part of the year.

Honeysuckle? Make sure you buy the right one though! Some can take over. Also Mexican orange blossom 🌹

I think holly bushes are a nice addition to a garden. They need a trim but you can do that while cutting holly for the house at Christmas. Dark green leaves and red berries which the birds like. They can be quite sculptural.

American flowering currants are nice and grow pretty quickly. A Red Robin maybe? Or you could grow a mulberry bush/gooseberries/raspberry canes.

Mulberry is a tree, unless you get that variety which has been bred for growing in a pot on the patio.

No honeysuckle 😬I’m trying to rescue a large garden that was left to grow wild for years. Honeysuckle is surprisingly difficult.

I know you said no hedging but I have birds nesting in my Hawthorne hedge every year and it's lovely to see them darting in and out.

helly29 · 16/04/2024 19:46

Pyracantha is a lovely shrub
I have a pieris japonica which is about 2ish meters and columnar (not sure which variety as inherited it when we bought the house!)
Some hebes are that size and are covered in bees in summer.
Ceanothus
Cordon fruit tree?

Harrysmummy246 · 16/04/2024 19:47

We have a magnolia stellata, a forsythia, a flowering currant, a choisya (mexican orange blossom) and a spiraea that all meet the description.

Go to a local nursery and ask their advice. (I am that person for our nursery/farm shop)

I loved the Hawthorne in at my old house, but it would definitely grow too high. I also think I had Pyracantha - is that the one with the thorns? We have deer who visit and I don’t want them to get hurt 😬

I have, round the edges from left to right, Viburnum, Cornus Alba, Ceanothus, Acer Variegata, Photinia, Shed, Lonicera (shrubby), Cotoneaster, Spirea, Photinia, Philadelphus, Rambling Rose, The Bride, Photinia, Amelanchier, Ceanothus, Photinia, Cotinus, Euonymous, Photinia, Olive tree, Ceanothus, Eleagnus Limelight, Stag Horn Sumac, Photinia, Ceanothus, Trachelospermum, Forsythia, Arbutus Unedo, Pieris Forest Flame.
Some will grow to 3-4 metres but are all easily pruned if required.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 16/04/2024 20:04

Lots of flowering hebes fit the bill

HikingFromHome · 16/04/2024 20:34

I’m going to spend some time googling these - thank you.

Enjoy, and by all means come back and ask again, there are loads more than might suit particular soils/more shady etc

CatherinedeBourgh · 16/04/2024 21:00

In my garden there is a viburnum, some hardy hibiscus and a forsythia which meet that description.

Stillamum3 · 16/04/2024 22:05

We love our Mahonia. It's wonderful, it has pale yellow flowers twice a year and has berries(also twice a year) that the birds love at times when other shrubs don't (like now). It does have quite spiky leaves though and is a bit taller at about 8 feet. Our Bluetits love the shelter it gives as it's evergreen. I think it's a very under-rated plant.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 16/04/2024 23:33

Oh yes, Pieris Forest Flame is lovely all year round. And very popular with bees when in flower.

My, that sounds beautiful. Please could you share a picture? 🌹
