Tomato seedlings

Hi,
this is my first year growing some vegetables from seeds. Usually I buy plants from garden centre.
Are these tomato seedlings ok or are they leggy?

They look fine to me - but you can always bury them deeper when you pot them up (in fact it's a good idea to do so). The little hairs on the stem will develop into additional roots when they are in contact with the soil and give the plants a much stronger and better start!

Thank you for your advice.
They’ve been growing for about 2 weeks.
When do they need to go into their own pots?
Thanks

Wait at least until the true leaves (the small ones just appearing between the cotyledons/ seed leaves) develop. Everything there is terribly brittle, you’ll want to handle them by their true leaves.

But actually you already have them in separate cells, so they’ll be perfectly fine there until they’re big enough to go into their final position. I transplant mine into 9cm pots only because I have 6 or so seedlings in a single cell.

caveat is, if they start flopping over, no harm in potting them up and planting much deeper.

That's interesting @MereDintofPandiculation because I was taught to hold the cotyledon leaf when pricking out to avoid damaging the newly emerging true leaves.

I’m not sure i can leave them until they go out as the container is small.

Sorry about the confusion and thanks for all the advice.

They look so lovely . I planted lots and only one seed sprouted from mine!

PennyWorth · 16/04/2024 15:35

Thank you @Schoolrefusa
I’ve planted lots too expecting only some to germinate and I’ve ended up with so many seedlings 😅

You're probably right. I just find cotyledons aren't always that well attached, and if you wait till the true leaves are properly emerged they won't be damaged. But that's probably late for pricking out, which isn't necessary now we don't usually grow things in seed trays but in their separate cells.

OK - pot them on when you think they're getting too big for the cells.

If you have too many, leave them in your front garden with a sign saying what they are & "Take Me" - they'll all go!

Thank you for your suggestion @MistyMountainTop
I’ve already promised to give some to friends and neighbours 😀
