Really disappointing spring flowers

Cant help but feel that the show of spring flowers this year is really disappointing. Maybe it’s the relentless rain and waterlogged ground?

Usually we have a lovely show of daffodils, muscari and narcissi (all bulbs I planted) but this year they’ve felt, if not sparse, then less plentiful than previous years.
Ive also spent far less time outside this spring on ac of the rain - just relentless!

Yes, lots have people have commented on sparser than usual spring bulbs, and some of my daffs have had less of display. I’d have thought that’d be more to fo with conditions last summer than conditions this spring

On the other hand, winter flowering cherry, Viburnum bodnantense, Cornus mas, Witch hazel, hellebores have all done really well, and spring in my garden has been very colourful.

Slugs ate so many of our daffodil flowers this year, I didn't even know they ate daffodils.

shellyleppard · 14/04/2024 19:36

My garden has been the same, hellebore looking good. Crocus put on a good show but not so much of the other ....apart from dandelion Lol

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/04/2024 19:39

Slugs ate all my hyacinths. Theyve never eaten them before. My grape hyacinths haven’t even appeared.

Solomons seal however is thriving!

I've had a super showing of iris reticulata, snake's head fritillary, various types of daffodils, and tulips. The tulips are all in containers. I lost most of the crocuses I set in the lawn in the hope that they'd naturalise, and some Golden Bells miniature daffodils didn't come up at all. The resident gastropods seem to have a taste for hyacinths.

I find they eat the flowers that have been knocked over by the rain, but as long as I keep the flowers off the ground they're OK. So I go around the garden and pick any flower stems that are lying horizontal and bring those in and put them in water.

Yes, same here - hyacinths badly affected by slugs, first time ever. But grape hyacinths are doing well.

My crocuses did nothing but daffodils and tulips are great. I planted v late- not sure if that was a factor in either outcome.

Bluebells are magnificent tho🪻

Yamadori · 15/04/2024 16:49

Daffodils fine, tulips put on a very poor show, but that is probably due to a water leak that soaked the soil for a couple of months last year, grape hyacinths doing really well and the forget-me-nots have gone bananas, spread out of the flower bed and are all over the lawn as well. Oh and my judas tree came into flower on Saturday.

Coastalcreeksider · 15/04/2024 17:03

I'm looking now at two pots of tulips that due to the very strong winds currently bashing the garden, are being flattened.

Blown so hard they are leaning to one side, petals being ripped off, I'm so disappointed with how they've looked this year especially as I spent quite a lot on the bulbs, the relentless rain hasn't helped either.

Might have to rethink next year's spring bulbs and whether it's worth the expense if the weather is so extreme now. 🥺

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/04/2024 17:25

My tulips have had all their petals ripped off. They’d only just opened😡

I feel your pain, we had a hail shower about half an hour ago.

That did them the world of good too! 🙄😩

Turkeyhen · 15/04/2024 18:40

My tulips are stunted this year 🥴

The slugs and snails have shredded my iris foliage. I can't remember it ever being this wet in east anglia!

MaddieElla · 15/04/2024 18:51

All our tulips came up and looked like they were going to be beautiful. They never actually flowered, so gutting. I don't understand what's gone wrong.

We did get some in pots at the front door to flower and the postman snapped them clean off 😡

What?! How?

mondaytosunday · 15/04/2024 19:46

I planted daffs and tulips fir the first time and had a magnificent display. Back beds are raised though, but front (daffs) are not.

Saz12 · 15/04/2024 20:09

Just been so very wet for bulbs! The woodlandy or water meadow types are happy enough (bluebells, fritillary etc) but not so much the tulips. A good year for camelia though.
