Smells lovely and is taller than me (so easily over 5ft). I want to buy more to surround a seating area in the garden but I have no idea what it is.

I take it back-I’ve just been to check on my choisya at the end of the garden and it is in bloom! It has much more yellow leaves than yours though

That’s because it’s a yellow leaved variety, possibly “Sundance”

Yours might be a Choisya Sundance where the new growth is bright yellow

Oh god, that's the bushes we had up near me; the wasps used to hide in it and every time I went past they'd be straight into my hair!! 😱😱

I've taken a couple of close ups of the leaves. I'm leaning towards Choisya rather than osmanthus from photos I've found on Google.

It was flowering when we moved in last September too which confused me.

Even without google, you’re right to go with Choisya because
a) your plant has 5 petals and Osmanthus has 4
b) your plant has compound leaves, each one composed of three leaflets, Osmanthus has simple leaves.

Those leaves are very characteristic and make Choisya in general and Choisya ternata (yours) in particular one of the most instantly recognisable bushes.

Apologies! They do look very similar.

Can a Choisya grow in a spot with only 1 hour of sunlight a day? Or would Osmanthus be better?

Quite possibly. Mine is flourishing in a west-facing location, with buildings 2-4m away on the east and south sides.

aramox1 · 13/04/2024 12:38

It flourishes despite my lack of care. Go for it!

Thanks @MereDintofPandiculation

Now I need to decide whether I can wait until summer to take cuttings or buy more now. I have a big garden to sort out so I guess I'll go with cuttings. Gardening is a tough lesson in patience 🙈

@aramox1 mine is on the west side of a south facing garden. It gets a lot of light in the morning but there's a big conifer just after it which blocks the afternoon and evening light.
