Ideas for a small rockery garden

Hi folks

I have a small border (just under 2m x 1m) at the front of my lawn which has some boulders.
Looking for ideas of what to do with it - what should I plant there, should I replace soil with decorative stones?
Usually get lots of grass & weeds growing in the border - had a bit of a tidy up yesterday.

Many Thanks
Gary

I like a bit of a rockery. I'd put some aubretia, saxifrage and violas in there.

I don't see the point of the 'rockery', why not get rid of the stones and just plant some plants? I'd suggest a combo of Lavender Hidcote, Hydrangea Strong Annabelle, Geranium Rozanne, and Verbena Bonariensis. All easy maintenance and pretty much immune to pests/disease.

I'd get rid of the grass and have your front garden in its entirety as a rockery.

you need to build up the height a little. Rockery plants like to tumble down structures to some degree, or at least be on different levels just like they grow on a mountainside. Use weed matting to keep weeds under control and add different media such as fine grit and shale for texture and drainage.

unfortunately what you've got there atm is a patch of grass with a bit of soil and a few random stones, which does not a rockery make! Grass and rockery are incongruous. You have a nice blank canvas and space to work with.

I’d get rid of the grass and make the whole strip into a bed. You’ll always have trouble keeping grass out of a bed if it’s alongside a lawn. And aesthetically it will look better, less “bitty”.
