Climber

Hi!
We're getting a new shed and would like a pretty climber to go up it.
Preferably in a pot, and one that grows quickly and has nice smelling flowers.
And is resistant to me killing it...
I'm thinking of a rose but that might take years?
Thanks!

Clematis Montana. Virtually bulletproof and will be fine in a pot.

Why don't you grow sweet peas each year as annuals. Lovely scent and easy to grow X

gettingolderbutcooler · 31/03/2024 20:34

Both good ideas that I can use in different parts of the garden, thank you!

Montana is a great idea. Also honeysuckle and get a late flowering clematis too

napody · 31/03/2024 20:58

Wisteria?

Victor1aPlum · 31/03/2024 21:12

Clematis Montana won’t be fine in a pot, it’s enormous.

Ditto wisteria unless you buy a dwarf variety.
You could try jasmine. Grows quickly & smells beautiful. Might need to cover it in winter. Mine died last winter after several cold snaps.

Trachelospermum jasminoides (star jasmine) smells Devine. Also evergreen.

Geneticsbunny · 01/04/2024 08:09

My friend has a Montana in a medium/ large pot and it is fine. It covers her whole shed and the kids play house.

napody · 01/04/2024 08:21

Same with wisteria- it's a very large pot though!
But actually I hadn't thought of jasmine- agree that's a better suggestion.

Artificial Ivy.

Purplestorm83 · 01/04/2024 15:37

Passion flower - grows fast but easily trained, lovely flowers and ornamental fruits, semi evergreen so doesn’t look like a load of sticks in the winter 😁

My star jasmine has been slow growing and is definitely not evergreen! Bought it from crocus over a year ago and wonder if perhaps not the right growing conditions.

is it definitely a ‘star Jasmine’ (not actually a jasmine at all!) as opposed to a ‘normal’ jasmine? I’ve had one in the ground a good few years and has been great and evergreen. I have seen some comments that it can suffer in harsh winters. Mine has been fine in the heavy frost, snow and hail in recent years. I am in the south west though. Perhaps if it’s colder with you that could have something to do with it? Hope yours picks up soon.

Bovrilla · 02/04/2024 14:41

Depends on which way it's facing.

Montana is quick to grow and pretty tough. Potato vines (solanum) or Russian vines do not buy as they're rampant in the case of russian vine and poisonous to kids in the potato vine case.

Rambling roses great but a sod to prune (SO spiky) but if it's sunny would be glorious.

Climbing hydrangea do well in big pots if N/NE facing walls. Or a Virginia Creeper is a reliable one, no flowers but lovely colour in autumn and contained in a pot but work well and deal with any shade happily

Bovrilla · 02/04/2024 14:43

My passion flower I had was like a sodding triffid. But looked awful in winter, it was just twigs. No evergreen anything. I hacked it back and up it came like Lazarus every April.

Trachelospermum Jasminoides - is what I ordered from Crocus - think that’s star Jasmine.

It looks promising at the moment, has a number of new looking stems. Only thing is, they’re turned away from the fence and I’m wondering if I should dig up/ rotate the plant toward fence so that I can start training it up the wires?

Yes I'd prefer one that stays a bit green.

RogueFemale · 03/04/2024 23:28

I recommend you avoid roses. They're prone to pests and mildew and need a ton of pruning.

Clematis flowers very briefly, then it's just leaves.

Jasmine doesn't climb in the way you're after.

Best off with passion flower, as it's vigorous, it climbs, it flowers for months and bees love it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/04/2024 23:42

I was going to start a thread but I'm going to piggy-back this one

I also want a climber as I have a large pot in good sun in an enclosed paved area ( so I can put it near a fence and train it along wires )

It used to contain a Passionflower but I've had no luck with them ( one grew like a triffid but the hot summer a couple of years ago killed it . New one last year died )

I have already :
Clematis (don;t know what type , it is trying but the slugs are winning )
Sweet peas (lots)
Jasmine (gorgeous)
Hop - it is growing well
Boston Ivy (x2)
Chocolate Vine (doing well_
Ivy ( which I might take cuttings of )

I don't want more clematus or try passion flower again
I cannot abide honeysuckle smell
Wisteria sounds too complex

I did think grape vine but I don't want wasps
I will regret a Russain Vine won't I ?

Anything I haven't thought of ?
TIA
