Squirrel proof bird feeder

Has anyone used a bird feeder like this? Seen it advertised and wondered if it would do the trick.

We've tried the cage type but the squirrels just ended up swinging off it! The scattered bird food was then attracting rats which we also want to avoid!

Can’t say about that one but can recommend RSPB squirrel busters- which are very similar in design to the one linked!

I've got some with metal grills round the plastic central bit. I also have bottles hung above mine as it stops the squirrels getting to the feeders.

Oooh I'll have a look, thank you!

Hmm, that's the type we did have but the squirrels ended up swinging from it scattering seed! Is yours hanging in a tree? We haven't got any trees so it's hanging from a crook type thing so I don't think there would be room to fit a plastic bottle above it.

i’ve got the Roamwild one, and it’s really good. Squirrels and pigeons kept at bay.

We have one like that Op - it is effective but one year the squirrels managed to hang from another arm of our bird feeder and chew through the metal bar where the seeds are, we patched that up with tape and faced the remaining intact side away from any other arms of the bird feeder and it is now quite squirrel proof. It is funny watching them fall off it.

the plastic tube with metal bars round it has been the best for us so far.

We have some which have a sort of large ( aboutaFoot across) clear Perspex dome across the top, they are very effective . The squirrels sort of slither on the top and then fall off, then they run away because the birds laugh at them and call them names ( I heard a Robin say ‘plonker’) .

We have 2 Roamwild ones, the seed one we find that the visiting woodpecker pulls loads out and scatters all over, so the pigeons (fat already) get what's on the ground. We may use for seeded fat balls to prevent spillage. The nut one works better. We have them suspended below a bird table (roofed) which is on top of a shiny pole. The squirrels have learned how to shimmy up the pole, but cannot access the nuts, they don't even bother climbing the pole now.

I bought 2 of those last week OP! I never had a squirrel problem though, but I wanted to encourage the smaller birds rather than all the pigeons. They are hanging off a stand which has a water bowl thing attached underneath. The pigeons keep standing on the edge of the water bowl and peck at the seeds- but its inside the plastic so they can't get to it!
I'm yet to see a small bird feeding, but hoping that its early days and they don't realise its there.

I bought my PIL's a feeder which spins if something heavy lands on it- like a squirrel. They weren't keen, so I never got to see it in action, but the sales video looked great.

I read that you can add chilli powder to seeds and it deters squirrels, whereas birds can't detect it. Worth a try.

Another vote for the squirrel busters. Pricey but so good!

dreamingofsun · 31/03/2024 10:39

@yorkhouse correct they are hanging from a tree. is there room for a frizbee type thing as i have also used those. this is in conjunction with the squirrel proof feeder, it stopped them eating all the nuts etc.

YorkHouse · 31/03/2024 15:01

Oooh this is really interesting, thank you!

I've found a new garden centre to try so going to see what bird feeders they stock, but will then order one online if they haven't got anything suitable.

We tried mixing in chilli where we used to live - the squirrels just ate it regardless!
