Wisteria buds

A couple of years ago I posted about our very established and leafy wisteria we inherited when we moved into our new house. I did the pruning as advised by every website, tried feeding it based on my research, put up wire to train it etc but it never flowered. It isn't in the best position sun wise but it does get a fair bit in the morning and early afternoon.

4 years on from moving in, without a sniff of a flower (apart from when I mistook leaf buds for flowers and got very excited and then very disappointed) I THINK finally we may have flowers 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 I am checking on them every day and had to share this with people who may understand!

Def looks like a flower bud.

I’ve heard they can take 7 years to flower. Mine never has 😢 I think I’m on yr 6 this year so fingers crossed.
What do you feed it @Stickthatupyourdojo ?

Some wisterias are 'seedlings' and are very reluctant to flower. If you see a 'bargain' cheap plant being sold (especially at a fete or similar sale) it probably won't flower in your lifetime! It's a case of having to pay top dollar to get a reliable flowering (usually named) variety. A good one, regularly pruned correctly and cared for is magnificent. The wisteria walk (Wusley) is amazing.

Eeeeeeee thanks all 🥳

@thenewaveragebear1983 for a couple of years I did fish blood and bone early spring. Last year I just did rose feed when I did my roses. I also topped it up with soil and a bit of manure last year around the main trunk. We also thinned it out a lot more robustly last year. I don't know how old it is, but the main trunk is really thick and old wood so must be getting on a bit. The people we bought from loved their plants but seem to have put them all in odd positions, shade loving in south facing, sun loving in east facing etc. this wisteria is against a fence and is SE facing but has my car in front of it as it's on the drive. I hope you get flowers!

There'll be no stopping it now 👏

Do NOT say the word flower anywhere in the hearing of your Wisteria. Definitely not flower buds. Some sort of gall Grin Next you’ll be saying out loud that the sun is coming out!

Well done! Be warned that they seem to take weeks and weeks. If you’re lucky you may get seed pods - like a large runner bean, but beautifully soft velvet.

Very good point, I will remain tight lipped in real life and I'll pretend I'm not obsessively checking when I walk by in case it notices and has a change of mind Grin

Fingers crossed for the seeds, that would be lovely.

Yes wisteria are sulky plants, paeonies and camellias can be right madams as well

lul1 · 31/03/2024 12:11

Hi all. Sorry to jump on. I have two wisteria which I bought last summer they are both still sticks. No branches leaves or buds. What should it look like now?

Thanks.

Most of us look at most of the threads - no need to multiply post. I’ve seen your post 4 times so far.

At the moment it should have buds. You could lift a sliver of bark, if it’s greenor pale underneath it’s alive, if brown it isnt

lul1 · 31/03/2024 23:12

Yes sorry. All of the wisteria threads I found were old so I wasn't sure anyone would be watching them.
