Easy inexpensive ( ideally chemical free) ways to clean licken from fence panels

I don't have an outside tap so can't use key washer.Have arthritis in my hands and arm wrist weakness. Was thinking I may have to somehow fashion attaching a hard bristled brush to a drill. Have seen an all in one brush and attachment but think it's mainly for washing wheels on a car. Plus don't want to keep on replacing the whole thing when the brush wears out.

Any ideas on how to clean concrete paving slabs would be great too

Do you absolutely need to clean the lichen off?

They clean pollutants out of the atmosphere so are making your space a healthier place to be in

stargirl1701 · 23/03/2024 12:51

Pay someone to do it.

Arrestedmanevolence · 23/03/2024 12:52

Don't clean it off! It gives you better air quality

SoDoneIn · 23/03/2024 12:54

Don’t! It’s so good for the environment. Enjoy its beauty

I've never used it but there is a product you can get called wet & forget, it has got really good reviews so I'm tempted to get some myself in future for my paths and fences as it does have great reviews. You just dilute it and put it on with a brush or watering can and leave it. Just editing to add, I've no idea if it's chemical free ,I'm guessing probably not ,but I really don't know

( facepalm). Just googled it. Don't think it is lichen - similar picture found on Google attached ( I'm not at home yet.

I’ve painted my fences a sage green so the lichen colour compliments it rather than clashing like it does on your one. It’s still there but it looks nicer.

I don’t think you can really wash it off though.. I painted over mine and it just appeared again.

That’s just algae. If you want rid of it in an easy and environmentally friendly way, use Algon. You dilute it with tap water, and apply it with a garden sprayer (I’m presuming you’re able to screw the lid on, apologies if not). Microbes get rid of the algae over a couple of days and you can use it on fences, pavers, pretty much anything! Pretty much zero effort.

I use soda crystals to reduce the amount of moss growing on my drive, the tarmac is degraded so cannot use a jet washer. I also have arthritis in my hands and knees so cannot stand up for very long nor scrub away at the moss if sat down.

I would try making up a solution in a watering can, I got the strength from the manufacturers website, and soak your fence with it. Hopefully it will rain in a couple of days to rinse it off! It won’t harm any plant life unlike other chemical products.

On my drive I tend to use it dry and just scatter the crystals on top of the moss then leave for a few days before watering the area if necessary, it does look a bit odd, like snow, but is effective in killing the moss and preventing new growth for a couple of years. Ideally I should use a stiff brush to remove the browning moss but I struggle to do that now.

The moss on my drive is really bad at the moment after the awful wet weather we have had recently so I’ll be out there as soon as it stops raining for a few days. It will take me a while as I’ll only be able to do a bit at a time but I’m not a fan of using strong chemicals in my garden.

Honestly OP, if you have issues with your hands and wrists I’d avoid handheld machinery. You have to carry it as well as operate it.
Something like this would work as you can carry it with the shoulder strap.

Buy a bottle of spray white vinegar and use that on it. Anything stronger will have a toxic effect on the soil below.
