What do I need to do now to rescue this grass? (Photo) 🌱

We got rid of the previous owner’s astroturf last Easter and laid grass turf. It took beautifully and we had a gorgeous green lawn all summer.

The garden is north facing so you can see here what’s happened over winter. The grass nearest to the house hasn’t had a spot of sunshine for months. The grass further back has had some sun over winter, but is still very patchy.

What do we do now to bring the lush green carpet back?! Do we need to plant grass seeds? If so do we just scatter them or do it in individual holes? Grass feed?

Please help a gardening newbie! Thank you ☺️

Rake well, mow, rake again at rightangles to the first raking, wait a week, feed.

I use Westland child and pet friendly seed. You need to scuff the bald bits and lay plenty of seed and I also put a thin layer of compost on top to protect them while they bed in and water regularly. I live in a high clay area and my grass really suffers in the winter. This works every year. Indeed i managed to fix a huge patch that used to be under a trampoline and you'd never know it now. It was completely bald.

Could it be a leatherjacket infestation. They eat the roots and kill the grass. It looks very wet. Does it need to be drained. Could be a bit early yet to put down grass seed.

Just sprinkle lawn seed all over the area and then keep off it entirely for at least 6 weeks or until it is a lot drier. You can get seed mixtures designed for shady areas, so maybe try and get hold of some of that. Most garden centres stock a variety.
