Hiya,

I have this plant in a pot and want to plant it into the garden, but wondered what it is so I place it in the correct area.

Many thanks 🙏

Camelia. It likes acid soil

And I think they like to be in east facing borders although I have seen them in full sun too. I think full sun can damage the flowers a little bit sometimes?

We have lots growing in woodland so they clearly like dappled shade

Perfect thanks! I have the perfect place for it x

I thought it was the other way round - that in an east facing border, after a frost, the flowers heat too quickly in the early morning sun, and go brown. It’s certainly the east facing flowers on my camellia that I lose.

Camellia, they like dappled sunlight, roots need to be kept cool in summer especially when young or if in pots. They like a slightly acidic soil, they are reasonably hardy but a frost will turn the flowers brown, as they are at risk of frost burn. If the leaves start to yellow it's likely the soil is too alkaline and they can't take up enough nutrients.
They are pretty tough once they get going (but young plants shrubs need a bit more TLC) We have them planted in between our rhododendrons so have lovely blooms from mid dec through till May!
