Hi all

Got this off Facebook for a bargain just what we were after BUT there is so much brown in the garden,.brown fences, brown picket fence, a lot of green in the garden to but I just feel it looks bland? I'm tempted to paint it a green shade (I'll insert pic below of shade I'm after) if you have any recs of colour match. I do have pretty cushions for summer but just feel it could.do with jazzing up. I love green, I wouldn't paint it another colour like blue pink etc. or shall I just leave it?!

This is the shade of green I like. Our shed is in ' willow' so I'm wondering if there might end up being to much green

The problem is if you paint it you'll have to keep doing it - and it will be a pain. Trust me, I've done it and regretted it.

I would just power wash it and keep it oiled, and use flowers in your garden for colour.

@CatherinedeBourgh that's a point, some say 6 year longevity but probably won't end up being that way

I would paint it. But need to make sure you are using the right kind of paint.

Pootles34 · 05/03/2024 14:08

I wouldn't, it's in good nick - if it was on it's last legs I would. Everything is brown this time of year - I reckon it'll all look a lot better in a couple of months.

CatherinedeBourgh · 05/03/2024 20:20

The problem is that that longevity may well be true if it's a vertical surface which doesn't get too much sun.

A horizontal surface in the sun will fare much, much worse.

Paint it, use Frenchic Alfresco paint its brilliant

This. It rarely lasts as long as you think and it's hard to get it really even.

I'd get a nice planter for the middle of the table for some colour and use cushions and table mats.

You could always paint your lovely little picket fence green and hang some plants from it.

DrJoanAllenby · 05/03/2024 21:15

I wouldn't paint it but in the warmer months I would dress it up with bright seat pads and a table runner and a big jug of flowers from your garden. Or a potted plant.

ungarden · 05/03/2024 22:04

I would with osmo coloured oil paint, did mine a few years ago, oil paint wears well and is easy to over coat.

It’s not that good. I did my kitchen in it and it needed touching up within 6 months, and we aren’t heavy handed.

The FB page deletes any negative views people post on there.

No, it’s never ending job, and don’t use French chic

just buy some bright cushions for it, and add a nice outside plant or flowers on top.

SleepingisanArt · 05/03/2024 22:24

I have a lot of wooden planters and furniture in my garden. I used Cuprinol Garden Shades. The garden is south / southwest facing so a lot of sun and that side of the house is also battered by the wind and rain. I put the furniture in the shed for the winter but the planters stay out all year - I repaint the planters every 4 years (ive had them 11 years) and the furniture is still going strong 5 years since it was first painted....

badlydrawntoy · 05/03/2024 22:31

I probably would, if not this year then next year. I love a good makeover. It always looks so fresh and new afterwards and you can get the exact colour or look that you want.
Another option is to sand and clear varnish the top of the table and maybe parts of the chairs but then use colour on the legs and sides. That can look nice.
I like sage green & seagrass colours. But I just painted my front door Cool Beans (French Chic) and that's rather nice too.

senua · 06/03/2024 06:26

I like the colour on the set in the photo but not the finish. It looks dead and 'flat'.

DiscoBeat · 06/03/2024 07:00

I think painting teak can be high maintenance - worse than oiling it as it can flake off. I'd rub it down and use teak oil, buy green cushions and parasol to go with it.

LadyNijo · 06/03/2024 08:15

I think I’d paint the fence before I’d paint the table and chairs, which look good as they are. Or grow a climber on it to take the brown look off it.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 12/03/2024 08:47

I painted an old bench a few years ago. It was in poor condition, but I did lots of prep and was pleased with the finished result light grey). It looked fantastic that year, ok-ish the following year, but dreadful after that. I think it needs to be redone at least every other year to look good.

We have a table and chairs set similar to yours, and by experience with the bench has put me off ever painting outdoor furniture. I use a teak oil type thing instead and it’s much lower maintenance.

Me too. Painting the fence makes the biggest difference to a garden.

RogueFemale · 12/03/2024 19:58

I'd paint the patio set because there is so much brown. Doesn't matter if the paint deteriorates over time, if you don't mind a 'distressed' look (which I don't really).
