Scarifying a small lawn

Blahblarblehbleh · 03/03/2024 16:28

My lawn is 5yrs old and has patches of horrible tough grass and areas of moss. I'm determined to tackle it this year but don't have the budget or space for an electric scarifier.

Can anyone help confirm the process of scarifying and whether I'm ordering the right tool?

I'm thinking I need to apply moss remover, use a rake over the lawn...and then do I use one of these....

If so..how often do I make the dents in the grass?

And then do I apply more grass seed? Also for the big patches of dodgy grass am I better off digging that up and then scarifying the soil?

Please let me know any tips or if this is right? Thank you 😊

A garden fork will do exactly the same job as one of those.

Why does a lawn have to be grass? Moss is lovely to walk on and needs less mowing. Let's face it any dense green of low height would do, visually speaking it is only convention that means it's usually grass.
I always fancied a chamomile lawn, or there are other fragrant herb plants that grow dense and green and smell amazing when you walk on them, and don't need mowing or raking etc.
Just a wild card idea. 😁

I hear you...and I feel I'm at a happy medium being surrounded by fake plastic lawns!!

That's an aerator not a scarifier, and a garden fork will do the same job. Push in all the way and then jiggle back and forth. For scarifying, you need an ordinary lawn rake and they are fairly cheap.

therealcookiemonster · 03/03/2024 16:43

I just got in a lawn care company to come and treat my lawn. they do a bundle whereby they do the aeration/scarification/feeding/moss treatment at different times of year.

might be worth it depending on the size of your lawn

Thanks...Good point...sorry that's amazon suggesting that when I searched for scarifiers!

Thanks. How much do you pay for your lawn?

I do:

Apply moss remover
Scarify with lawn rake
Make dents with garden fork
Sprinkle some fertiliser - I use general purpose but they also sell a special one for spring
Spread good compost or lawn topsoil
Sprinkle some lawn seeds

JamMakingWannaBe · 03/03/2024 17:12

Mow your lawn. It will be difficult to rake long grass.
Apply a general purpose weed, feed, and moss killer. Follow the instructions carefully.
After a couple of weeks, rake out the dead moss.
The tool you've linked to is for aerating your lawn IE if it is clay and particularly compacted.
Mow your lawn at least once a week. Little and often. The same way that you pinch out plants to make them bushier applies to grass.
My preferred method to deal with patches is to sow grass seed in a seed tray. Nurture it as you would any seeds. You then have a ready made piece of turf for filling in. Gumtree is also a good source for leftover single lengths of turf.
For filling in lumps and bumps, brush over sieved compost/sand.

If you want to get a bit deeper than you can with a rake, then manual scarifiers are available. They look like this: www.gardenersworld.com/reviews/wolf-garten-multi-change-roller-moss-removal-rake/

Thanks. How much do you pay for your lawn?

400 for scarification
about 1200 for all the treatments in the year including scarification (2 aerations spring and winter, multiple feeds and moss treatments and 2 x soil improver). its pricey but my lawn was in a state after some poor maintenance by rather inexperienced gardener.

the garden is just over half an acre and they charge according to size of lawn so expect to pay more or less depending on your size

Nahjah · 03/03/2024 19:25

We have wolf garten attachments for aerator and scarifier. I find giving the lawn a really good scarify manually is bloody hard work though (ours doesn't have the wheels I see you can get now - presume that makes it easier!). A rake is only going to manage a light scarify.

Our neighbour has an electric one (and now does it for us - we help him out with something else in exchange) - highly recommend! Otherwise you'll end up just giving it a very light scarify unless you're much fitter than me! It looks shit after you've done it but it will do it the world of good.

Blahblarblehbleh · 03/03/2024 20:30

Thanks a lot everyone. Much appreciated 👏🏻

You'll need to do it a couple of times, to get best results.

Mow. Rake/scarify. Mow again to trim all the bits you've dragged loose. Rake/scarify again now the rake can get properly down to the roots.

Do the repeat cycle at rightangles to the first one.

JobMatch3000 · 05/03/2024 15:55

Agree with above. Ask around your friends / work colleagues. Someone is likely to have a machine you can borrow in exchange for a bottle or two of wine.

I've got all the stuff I need (thanks all) qq, I've got clumps of really awful grass that I usually dig up each year- do I still need to do this or will doing all the above sort it lit without need to dig it all up?

OP posts:
NoBinturongsHereMate · 16/03/2024 09:49

Define 'awful'.

That looks like Yorkshire Fog. I’d dig it out if I were you. It’s a clumping grass rather than a spreading one. But that’s not necessarily the grass you’ve got.

Blahblarblehbleh · 17/03/2024 14:27

So far I've mowed, raked over the lawn pulling up loads of moss and dead grass. I've applied moss killer/lawn feed type powder. I'll go over with the rake once the moss is dead. Potentially need more moss killer but I'll see.

I've bought a fork so I'll go over the lawn adding holes...Will apply new grass seed, law feed, compost. When I'm doing that I'll dig up the clumps of dodgy grass.

Thanks all...Will update in a few weeks 😁

JamMakingWannaBe · 20/03/2024 00:24

Check the packet of your moss/weed killer. From memory, you'll have to wait 6-8 weeks before re-seeding.

TheGirlattheBack · 23/03/2024 21:53

We hire any lawn equipment we need from our local Sydenhams hire. 1 days hire is usually really cheap.

SnapdragonToadflax · 23/03/2024 21:56

Moss is great, it stays green for longer in a drought.

(My lawn is very shady so I've made my peace with moss and actually really like it now...)
