I have a pair of newly dug beds, West Mids, frost pocket, SW facing with plenty of sun and lots of manure in the beds. The beds face a rectangular lawn that I've planted a 3 matched pairs of crab apples along. All supposed to be about 8 foot tall, 'tree shaped' with blossom in the spring and fruit/autumn colour in the autumn.
I'd like to add a pair of other trees in the corners of the new beds to mirror the crab apples and provide some structure.
Requirements:
- up 8 foot high with a 'tree shape', so clean trunk and canopy
- canopy not too broad as it's in a flower bed and I don't want them to take over!
- ideally blossom in the spring and fruit/autumn colour
I've been considering small medlars (we have another big medlar) but worry that the canopy will be too broad. Also thought of cherries, but they tend to get frosted. I considered acacia pravissima, but I don't think it's hardy enough where we are.
Any ideas?
