Climbers in pots for west facing fence

Outside my back door I have some decking which has about a 0.5 m gap to the fence which is a bit of a dead zone. It's my neighbours fence so we can't paint it or attach stuff to it. Not sure the soil is great there although weeds seem to cope fine!

I was thinking of trying some climbers in pots with trellis but trying to work out what to give long period of interest. Was thinking maybe a clematis but the one I was looking at was only flowering in march / April (apple blossom armandii) so thought maybe something for summer too. Maybe a rose. The space is about 1.5m width wise so I may be being overambitious especially if it's in a narrow container. Prefer perennials ideally.

Does anyone have any good combos they have used or tips for me?

I would put a raised bed, so effectively a bottomless container, so the plants can then root into the strip of soil, but have some better soil to start out with.

How about a jasmine? If a rose, I would choose one with no or few thorns.

Winter flowering jasmine and a spring clematis with grow through each other comfortably as long as you keep the soil charged with nutrients, and there is adequate room for the roots.

I'd suggest a passiflora (passion flower). They flower the whole summer and in the right spot will continue into October. Very pretty and bees LOVE the flowers.

I'd avoid roses unless you're an experienced gardener, as they're prone to all sorts of pests and diseases.

David Austin have a really beautiful rambling rose called Lady of the Lake.

If you fancy a rose why don't you write to David Austin describing your situation. I've done that a few times and always get lots of brilliant advice and suggestions back.

A word of caution - many climbers will get massive. The clematis you describe will grow to 8 metres tall given the chance.

Thank you for the suggestions. I hadn't considered passion flower or jasmine so will look at those. And maybe a smaller clematis! I always like the big ones but I don't have space.
