Shed location dilemma

Hi, moved into my new build house 2 years ago and only just getting around to sorting the garden out to make it more inviting. I'm going to extend the patio from the house to cover maybe a quarter of the garden from the house and would also love to put a shed in my garden as I have no garage. I have no children so just myself to consider when planning my garden.
I need your help in deciding where to locate the shed.

I've attached a photo for help - the garden is south facing, 16' (5 mtr) wide by 150' (45 mtr) long and the only redeeming feature at the moment are the few trees at the bottom.
I'm thinking a shed of about 8 x 6' but when I try to envisage where it will go and what it will look like I just can't decide where is best without blocking the view of trees.
Come on ladies, what do you think?

Here's another shot taken from bedroom window so you can see better the shape of the garden from above...

How wide is that diagonal bit of fence?

RogueFemale · 18/02/2024 17:24

The most obvious spot would be at the end on the left (long side parallel with the fence, door facing the house). You'd still see the trees above the shed roof.

If your budget will stretch, I'd recommend a pretty shed like this one.

What will be in this shed?

Madcats · 18/02/2024 17:30

Do you have a compass in your phone (to figure out shadows)?

Do you want a "shed" to dump stuff in or is it to be more of a summerhouse?

You can get some really shallow depth ones: https://www.robertdyas.co.uk/outsunny-wooden-tool-storage-shed-green?

If you site it near the bottom of the garden it will be the focal point, which is probably not the look you are after.

I'd put it to one side of the garden, and much nearer the house. preferably so it isn't blocking the view of the garden from the windows. You can paint it a nice colour, attach trellis to it, grow stuff up it etc, or one of those outdoor mirrors. The other reason for siting it near the house is so you can pop out there and take stuff in and out of the shed in bad weather without having to traipse all the way down to the bottom of the garden. Makes it easier to install electricity if you want as well.

Maybe on the right hand side as you are looking out, just beyond where the slabs are currently.

End of the garden I think (but check planning permission website as our council only lets you have 6'x6' with a limited height) and can't be over a certain proportion of the garden. You don't want to be really happy and have to take it down.

Also have you considered rain run off if you are going to lay a patio. Again it would be lovely to sit out on but just check it isn't going to be a swamp when it rains.

Sorry I feel like a miserable old soul, it's just your garden sounds delightful and a few minutes thought before you start might make all the difference to how much you enjoy it Smile

I think that I would turn a negative into a positive, make a virtue of necessity.
Situate it on the right hand side, just where the fence diagonals in. The eye will assume that the fence carries on in a straight line after your shed so it will think that the garden is bigger than it is. Do make it a focal point: make the exterior look like a pretty summer house even if the reality of the interior is more prosaic. Meanwhile have a faux path going round the shed to the rear - again implying that there is a sizeable wood there even if the reality is only the few trees on the left. Thus the view from the patio will be summer house and spinney (supposedlyGrin ). The area behind can, in actuality, be one of those dumping grounds that all gardens need (e. g. compost heap or water butt?)
The only problem will be that you will be seeing the north, shaded side of the shed which is not ideal for flowers. Make up for it with a good paint job and some gardenalia. You can have some flowers if you go for something that scrambles over the roof e.g. roses.
Put in some other features e.g. flower beds that go across the garden (same as the shed). It will stop it looking long-and-thin.

Lovely photo RogueFemale!

It's about 1 foot... Strange quirky boundary 😅

I agree with @Yamadori , but then what I’d do with that garden is to divide it at intervals so you can’t see it all at once and have to go hunting.

More to dump stuff in although a summerhouse would be fabulous. The style that @RogueFemale would be a good compromise although as other posters have suggested to maybe dress the shed with a climbing rose and a pretty paint job.

I did consider this but dismissed it as felt it would just dominate the garden but, the way you've described it... maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing. I wonder if there's a site where you can virtually 'see it in your garden' option 🤔

Thank you so much for this insight, I hadn't realised so will check before going ahead. Oh, and the rainfall issue... Maybe a waterbutt will be on my shopping list too.

Thank you all so much for your replies and suggestions... Exactly the kind of feed back I was hoping for 🙏. I have a guy coming out next week to quote for the patio and the shed base so will bear all this in mind. I'll post updates when the work gets underway etc 😊

If you have it with the long 8' edge against the fence, and the 6' width with a door in it facing the house, it should be fine.

You could paint it like a beach hut if you like. 😂
