Is it me or is this way past its best.

I want to know how to DO things.. what to plant, where, when. How to propagate.

Monty we don't have gardens big enough to leave to go wild and mow a path through..

I don't want to see endless videos of other peoples gardens either.

Loved GW today. I could relate to everything except the daffodils man, but I liked the flowers.

Probably the most relevant episode. Apart from the bloke boasting about his 3.5 acre 'garden'.

Zebracat · 26/04/2024 21:09

Yes I know but those candelabra primula were gorgeous…

billysboy · 27/04/2024 15:34

Good episode tonight

SpeedwellBlue · 27/04/2024 17:21

I love the single flower fanatics.

Twelvetimes · 27/04/2024 18:12

I really enjoyed last night's episode, even Daffodil man. It was great to see Rheka, hopefully she will be a regular again this year.

The candelabra primroses were amazing!

BatteryPoweredPeacock · 27/04/2024 19:34

Yep, enjoyed last night's episode.

I don't mind the mad-for-one-flower types, though I always wish they gave more info about taking care of that flower but they do tend to give some good tips. Even the 'I've spent thousands of pounds and 30 years getting this garden like this' type had a really beautiful garden and so was interesting to watch. Particularly as his 'thing' was just to tweak what nature had already provided for him.

Overall we found ourselves chatting about the program as it was showing - which is always a good sign!

When I left the UK and came to Australia, God how I missed GW. Gardening Australia wasn't a patch on it. Then I saw that in a one-hour programme - yes, 7.30 on a Friday evening! - they have to fit in gardening advice that covers a continent.

While each region isn't represented in detail every week, the overall coverage is excellent, with presenters based in all the state capitals, but not the territories. There's a strong element of community gardening, particularly involving people new to Australia, as well as garden DIY, houseplants and art.

The bit I like best is the last 4 minutes when you're shown a suitably coloured map of Oz and told the weekend's jobs for each climate zone.

I have to prepare a small tree for planting apparently!

I used to watch Peter Cundall on GA decades ago (loved the theme tune!) but practically all the gardens were Victorian Alps/Tasmanian English lookalikes!

WinkyTinky · 27/04/2024 21:05

I do look forward to GW on a Friday night. It's my hour to just stop and breathe. I like my garden but never ever listen to a word of how I should be looking after it, or take any notice of Jobs for the Weekend. I couldn't give a monkeys. I just like to see the nice flowers. Quite often I'll think ooo I like that flower, I'll note it down and maybe get one, but I never bother or remember. But!!! The candelabra primroses, omg!! I googled them straight away and have ordered a pack of five 😄
I used to like Monty and wasn't keen on Adam but now I've swapped round. Love Carol's happy face and mega enthusiasm, bless her. But I would say Frances is the best. I hope she takes over presenting in the future.

I enjoyed this week's GW, some useful stuff in there from Monty. I fast forwarded through Sarah Raven, we once went to her garden and I went off her after that.

I wanted to thank the posters above for the GQT recommendations, I listened to last week's and found it really interesting, it's on my weekly podcast list now.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 08/05/2024 08:14

I agree that last week's was an improvement, much more like the old days. Also agree about Sarah Raven, I still get her catalogues for the ideas, but was totally put off by a weekend course with her. DH has a picture of her addressing the course members from a high up vantage point which he captioned 'the sermon on the mount' which captured her ethos perfectly.

Twelvetimes · 08/05/2024 08:23

That sounds about right @MontyDonsBlueScarf ! I got her catalogues in those days too. We went to an Open Day (don't know if she still has them) but she seemed more keen on monetising than providing a good experience.

I wonder how much input Monty has into the content - if he chooses some of the topics to highlight or if it is all production led nowadays.

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 08/05/2024 10:44

I went to Monty’s recent(ish) talk. I got the impression that he chooses much of the Longmeadow content, although a lot of it chooses itself in that there are the annual items on how to plant bulbs/plant potatoes/prune roses etc.

billysboy · 17/05/2024 20:23

Enjoying the program tonight Frances looking the part

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 17/05/2024 20:44

Yes, I’m enjoying it. Newly Hall has long been on my list of gardens to visit.

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 17/05/2024 20:45

Argh. Autocorrect. Newby Hall.

Ifailed · 17/05/2024 20:47

I don't know how they manage with their tiny 7000 acre garden.

Churchview · 17/05/2024 20:53

I much prefer it when Adam presents the show.

Newby Hall is an absolute delight. I'm NE England and used to visit all the gardens and stately homes in North Yorkshire when I was first into gardening (late 90's) It was the first I ever visited, and it was lovely to see it again. My favourite part of visiting gardens is buying plants and seeds at the end. I remember it was around this time of year, and I bought some campanula, candelabra primula and a water lily.

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 17/05/2024 21:30

Yes, we’ve spent a lot of time in N Yorkshire but somehow have missed it. I agree about souvenir plants and seeds - it’s nice to have reminders of garden visits (although, having said that, the fancy hydrangea I bought at Harlow Carr died).

SarahAndQuack · 18/05/2024 10:44

Ooh, I've never been to Newby Hall, and this is inspiring me. I've not actually seen GW this week ... must watch.

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 18/05/2024 10:48

It was a good one, I thought. I’m assuming the next one will be wall-to-wall Chelsea Flower Show.

Pootles34 · 20/05/2024 20:36

Newby is amazing, especially if you have children to drag along - fab playground with little boats, and a miniature railway.
