Tall perennials

Laurasanford111 · 05/02/2024 20:55

Hello

We have a patio being done which has a gap of about 2 feet between the patio bricks and fence, within that border we would like to plant some things to add height and some colour around the fence. With the exception of verbena bonariensis as we have that a lot in other bits of the garden what other tall perennials would fit nicely in that space? Not foxgloves or delphiniums either

Thank you

What about hollyhocks?

napody · 05/02/2024 21:03

Angelica? Verbascum? Lupins (or tree lupin if you want it taller)

APurpleSquirrel · 05/02/2024 21:08

Nepeta Six Hills Giant
Buddleia
Evening Primrose
Choisya

Why not foxgloves or delphiniums? The reason is likely to have a bearing on suggestions.

MrsKwazi · 05/02/2024 21:53

Veronicastrum
penstemon not v high but long flowering
artichokes (for the flowers)

tealgate · 05/02/2024 22:28

Cosmos can be up to 1.2m if you choose the right variety

JustJessi · 05/02/2024 22:31

Hollyhocks are super tall, and the right rose bush might work well

@NoBinturongsHereMate hello, they are toxic and I have small children

Hollyhocks. The best flowers ever.

olderbutwiser · 06/02/2024 08:23

Cephalaria. Giant scabious, my favourite giant perennial. Or one of the heleniums. Hollyhocks are fabulous but do insist on good drainage. Cosmos.

What about a climber to cover the fence e.g. Trachelospermum jasminoides / star jasmine. Evergreen with autumn colour; fragrant flowers in the summer (nice for a patio); non-toxic. It's only half-hardy, though.

Ooh I'm glad I commented on this thread as getting lots of ideas myself! Similar situation to OP: new bed along sunny ish fence.
Can you grow cephalaria from seed? And do you find it needs staking?

Graceandfury · 06/02/2024 21:12

Salvia amistad

cornflower21 · 07/02/2024 09:21

Yes, they’re annual

Jasmin1971 · 07/02/2024 15:10

Flocks
Montbretia

Bridgetoo · 07/02/2024 15:13

If it's a sunny border then Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' - so cheerful

CherryMaple · 09/07/2024 08:11

Phlox.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/07/2024 07:16

Campanula latifolia?
I'd have thought though that a trellis on the fence and climbing plants would work well.
