Ideas for growing on an arbour

I've got a little arbour, the trellised side panels face about SSE and NNW. It's on paving slabs so plants are in largish pots. The shady side has a buddleia growing over it as well.

The back side has a trellis on which I usually grow sweet peas in the summer, that's usually fine.

I've tried clematis on both the sides, but the sunny side is too hot and the shady side allows leaf growth but rarely get a flower so I've rehomed to the borders. The sunny side currently has a jasminium beesianum which is a bit meh.

I'm in Lancashire so need plants which are quite hardy. Flowers and scent ideally, I don't mind if they're not evergreen or need cutting back for the winter.

So... any recommendations please?

Honeysuckle?

Winter flowering jasmine? Very twiggy and can be a bit like a bird's nest, but you can train them up things if you tie in the main stems.

Thanks ... I've got both of those on a fence, they do tend to get messy.
I don't like the winter jasmine much tbh, it grows through from the neighbours and roots into my border.

Honeysuckle is ok if there's something else it's climbing through but I don't think it works well alone though maybe there's some varieties that might be better for this purpose?

I'd have a Montana clematis, which is a thug, and a climbing rose

I've got a monster pink Montana on the fence too...I wonder if a white one would work on the shady side? I do love the soft vanilla scent, makes the pruning job worthwhile!

A rose might be a good idea for the sunny side, not sure why I'd not considered them. Would a (small) climber be ok in a pot?

What about some annual climbers - Sarah Raven has some lovely ones and the seed are available from other suppliers. Cobra and Ipomea are both really easy and perfectly happy in a pot

ErrolTheDragon · 09/02/2024 10:15

Ipomea would be lovely ... I've not tried them here (Lancashire), I never had any luck either them when I lived in North Yorkshire. (Apart from native whites, of course, they're very happy. Grin)

Is cobra a typo? (The only climber of that name I can find is a french bean thought the descriptions do say it's got pretty flowers.)

I have rambling roses on mine mixed with clematis. My clematis’ ( clemati?!) flower in the shade.

Do you happen to know what variety the clematis is?

Just a cheap one from Lidl!

Montana is too much of a thug for an arbour, it can cover houses. What about one of tge Clematis alpina varieties instead?

Possibly Cobaea scandens

ErrolTheDragon · 15/02/2024 22:55

Oh, cobaea (third attempt after automangled to cobra and then cobalamin) looks nice. The price of a packet of seeds is always worth a punt!

The shady side now has a Nellie Moser, and I’ve hacked back the buddleia so hopefully will be a bit brighter. I still need to decide whether to leave the jasmine beesianum on the sunny side and just supplement it with annuals (I’ve got a pack of morning glories to sow soon) or try something else.

having looked at the clematis alpinas in the local nursery, I want to get one (or more) for a fence position but not sure it’d be happy in a pot. Similar concern re roses… it’s perhaps a big ask for a perennial climber to be happy in a container.
