Wedding flowers for October

Hey, I’m getting married in October and would like to make my own bouquet and button holes but I have no idea which flowers would be in season during that time suitable for a bouquet, any advice please?

I’ve googled some ideas but not sure how realistic these are or they don’t seem very appropriate for a wedding

my favourite flowers are sunflowers, gerbera, dahlias, peonies but I think these are all summer flowers? Also love gypsophlia so would like to use that in my bouquet and button holes

thank you 😊

Some dahlias should still be around. Asters, chrysanthemums come to mind.

I still had roses flowering in November but weather might impact that.

For my November wedding I had cream roses and thistles.

Had to google Aster as wasn’t sure what it was but it’s lovely, thank you ☺️ I love daisies and it reminds of that

@Thrivenotsurvive they are also known as Michaelmas daisies!

I'm a bit clueless about what's in season when, but I had peach/orange roses, thistles and gypsophila at my October wedding.

We got married in October 2020 but it should have been May, which is when my favourite flower (peonies) are in season. My florist managed to get hold of cream roses in October which looked very like them.

Thank you for all your ideas, I was feeling a bit clueless but now have ideas of Asters, thistles and gypsophila. Found a few pictures of these combinations to give me
ideas and gysophila looks lovely as button holes too 😊

Wow, thank you for the idea of aster. It probably would have completely passed me by but is perfect 😍

You could also add in some lovely dried flowers, or seed heads - I had dried scabious seed heads in mine which looked lovely. And of course you can keep them after the wedding which is nice!

Anenomes are still around in October, eucalyptus leaves, roses, dahlias, gorgeous!

Hypericum berries are a nice addition. Also consider hard herbs such as rosemary, sage, veg such as curly kale. Lots of dahlias, chrysanths and other late summer early autumn flowers. There are plenty of florist books with seasonal flowers listed.

You can have anything you want if you're prepared to pay the import costs. If you google for local flower wholesalers, you can ask for a rough price list of flowers in October. Most of the imported flowers come via the Dutch flower markets and are grown under cover so they have lots available in October.

If you want to stick to British grown flowers, google for flower farmers in your area and ask what they usually have available in October. My nearest flower farmer grows outdoor plants and also grows in glasshouses so he has all sorts available out of season.

If you haven't done a flower arranging course, you'll need to learn about it because you need to know how to keep the flowers in top condition over several days. Some flowers need special conditioning before arranging or they'll quickly flop or dry out. There are loads of good florists / flower farmers on youtube. My favourite is Common Farm Flowers. https://www.youtube.com/@theflowerfarmer

Good luck!

Do 'overcater'. Flowers are unpredictable so you want to have successive sowing (over a few weeks) in case flowering is early / late this year.
You will need a lot of flowers! Bridal bouquets take about 50 stems; bridesmaids take 35 and each buttonhole takes 5.
I suggest that you rope in some friends and family, as belt and braces.

This is my wedding flowers from November. My friend’s mum did the flowers and I gave her pointers on the style and colours I wanted but gave her free rein based on what was in season. Some she ordered in and some she took from her garden (including Ivy as a nod to my Nan)

We got married in October, my bouquet was princess orange tulips and my centre pieces and bridesmaid bouquets were orange geberas and a mix of autumnal colours and my wedding colour purple. The button holes were also princess orange tulips

Those bouquets are gorgeous- thank you for sharing! ❤️

I won’t be having an bridesmaids so it will just be my bouquet and then button hole for DP and 2DS

I’ve fallen in love with this idea, which I’m hoping won’t be too difficult. Bet it’s one of those that looks more simple than it is though!

Ah. Because this was posted in the Gardening section, I assumed that OP was talking about growing-her-own. If we are talking about buying-in, then it looks like you can get practically anything e.g. spring-flowering tulips in October!

You can always do a mix and match. Buy-in the statement pieces / accent flowers / must-haves. Then fill in with grow-your-own.
