Thrips on indoor moth orchid

They're absolute bastards. Why do they happen? What are they doing molesting my baby? How do I make them die?

(Internet says soapy water but is that ok for an orchid?)

Spray with a pesticide.

Spray with a pesticide.

Pesticides don’t work on Thrips, well, maybe on the adults if sprayed directly. Thrips’ life cycle is that the eggs are laid under the soil, and the yellow nymphs that hatch out eventually colonise the plant. They are very fast runners and jumpers, so difficult to eradicate. The predators may work, but I’ve had no experience of them.
I had a bad outbreak of them many years ago on my Lithops (succulents) plants, as they absolutely love the yellow flowers, and despite all my best efforts could not get them under control. They did eventually disappear thankfully.

I've ordered some slow release predator sachets and some horticultural soap as they're now on one of my cacti 🙄

I shall report back!
