Alternative to Choisia

I need an evergreen to replace a choisia. I can't think of an alternative shrub for the spot.

Do posters have an idea for an evergreen alternative?

I don't hate them but the garden has three of them and I want something different.

How about a nice variagated holly?

Anselma · 29/01/2024 08:22

I've got a pittosporum that's similar in growth to my choisias. evergreen, lovely glossy leaves and can be left to grow or cut back if needed.
Lots to choose from, variegated etc.

Hebe? I have Midsummer Beauty. It still has a few flowers in bloom now in January!

Daphne? Benefit of gorgeously scented flowers at this time of the year.

Did you want a flowering shrub OP or just an evergreen for the nice foliage?
I've got a lovely lime coloured pittosporum, another vote for that. Foliage contrasts so well with the darker greens.
Or maybe a small tree like a magnolia grandiflora (evergreen) - the coppery tones to the leaves are lovely and then you get the huge white flowers.
Ceanothus is a great one for intense purple flowers.
Also another vote for a good reliable hebe.
If it's just for foliage, you could go for an aucuba japonica, the lighter version of a lonicera nitida, Portuguese laurel or a variegated euonymous or griselina. All vigorous once established.

Fatsia Japonica.

Fatsia Japonica.

Nice. I like a big leaved plant here and there.

bombastix · 29/01/2024 20:04

Thank you some good suggestions. Are any fast growers? I love daphne but they take ages to get any decent size!

Love fatsia but have four of them. Honestly trying to cut down on the habit

Pittosporum grows fast

Lots of nice viburnums too - some evergreen some not

Wbeezer · 29/01/2024 20:16

I like a viburnum tinus, nice to have winter flowers and it's also good for dry shade.

vipersnest1 · 29/01/2024 20:23

Spotted laurel?

QuickDraining · 29/01/2024 20:28

I agree a griselinia is good value. And everyone needs a Viburnum Tinus. A bay looks nice too. All three of them can be cut back. I'm down south, and an evergreen Euonymus looks nice when in berry, and with fresh growth in spring.

Fatsia Japonica.

Perfect choice.
