I might be wrong but it’s a bit tricky as I can’t get a good zoom in on the bark or twigs, I’m thinking cherry? Have you seen it over the year or just now?

Errolwasahero · 19/01/2024 18:21

Oh and is the white on it snow or the tree?

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 19/01/2024 18:22

Looks like a bit like a silver birch but maybe too many branches for a silver birch (unless the white is snow?).

it is not snow, it just white/silver bark, the bark is quite smoothy

Could it be a hornbeam? The pale bark and twist in trunk look like it might. Are there any dead leaves left underneath that might help you id.?

WristCandy · 19/01/2024 18:33

I also think an ornamental cherry. Have u you is seen it in the Spring, OP?

It's almost certainly a whitebeam, sorbus aria.

thans a lot, I believe it is whitebeam, it is only 3m from the garage of the house, I read the safe distance is 11m, recently I have some concern about the potencial subsidence.

Prunus - Ornamental Cherry tree. I've got one they grow very tall.

Some websites, particularly insurance ones, are over-cautious in the extreme with planting distances.

Whitebeam don't get enormous, only about 12-15m, unlike some others (eg sycamore, cherry or willow) it shouldn't be too much of a problem. They aren't notorious or well known for having invasive or thirsty roots that cause structural damage, subsidence or anything like that.

You could call out a good tree surgeon every 5 years or so to thin out the crown a bit and stop it from taking over the space. If they do it properly, they should be able to make sure it still has a nice shape to look at in the winter months, as well as keeping it in bounds and not getting too enthusiastic in the summer.

I think they are lovely trees - there's one about 100 yards up from my house and I'm rather fond of it.

TheSpottedZebra · 19/01/2024 20:48

Is it not your tree and you want a neighbour to cut it down?

imiami · 19/01/2024 22:21

It's mine, I like it, but recently I started to check all the trees around the house, just in case they can cause problem one day, before it is too late.
I believe Yamadori is correct, I properly leave this tree, but I will get rid of any plants which is not necessary.

Thanks so much for your advice, I believe the insurance guide is too much, I like this tree.

If you want any more confirmation, I’m with @Yamadori . There's good reasons to reject all the other suggestions, and the bark and the pattern of the branches is good for Sorbus, with the simple not compound leaves saying it’s a Whitebeam not a Rowan.

Insurance companies would have you get rid of any living organism within a hundred yards of whatever it is they are insuring. They are risk averse. 😂

imiami · 20/01/2024 13:53

Insurance firm might advise to get rid of sun from sun system for skin cancer risk.
Do you know what this tree?

That’s something that’s been maintained as a hedge for several years and then grown out.

unfortunately it’s got alternate simple oval leaves which is very common, so to get an id we need a good clear close up of bark, buds, leaf, both upper surface and lower.
