Garden Re-Design

We want to have our garden re-done as it's looking rather rubbish and needs work.

We have had a quote in which I think is reasonable given that the cost of this sort of thing has shot up in the last few years but wondered what opinion was!

Remove existing patio and path and replacing with a porcelain slabs - new patio will be around 8m x 5m, new path runs the length of the garden / around 15m.

Replace the paving under the shed with porcelain so it matches the rest, move and turn shed onto new base

All new grass

Removal of three tall trees

Edge the porcelain grass side in a grey chelsea block

Lay decorative stone against house and fence

Lay sleepers against back fence to create flower bed/planting area

Quote includes all materials and labour. Includes skip hire for any waste removed

£11k

It's kind of what I was expecting, although someone also told me they thought it would be closer to £20k as well based on recent works they had done.

Is this ok price?

Sounds very cheap to me. I'm getting quotes pf about 6k for nothing near that amount of qork and not porcelain tiles which are really expensive.

bendypines · 08/01/2024 14:38

Have you just had the one quote so far?

First one I have had back, but I suspect the other one will be more expensive as he didn't seem as keen

The one above is a company recommended to us and has decent reviews

Does it include the materials and the plants?

It sounds very cheap. Make sure the tree removal is done by someone who is appropriately insured, removing tall trees is dangerous and can cause damage to the surroundings.

Jessforless · 08/01/2024 17:26

That sounds extremely cheap to me, where in the country are you?

Includes all materials but no plants for the raised bed, I will supply those myself

That sounds extremely reasonable, I’d expect maybe double that, especially to include removing waste. I suppose it depends where you are

The people they are using for the trees are the required licences and insurances

Why are you removing mature trees?

RiverFlowers · 11/01/2024 19:19

Why are you removing mature trees?

Because they are too tall. We planted them when we first moved here about 9 years ago not totally realising how quickly they would grow and now they are too tall for us to deal with and the neighbours aren't keen on them either.

We will be replacing them with smaller trees.

Too bad for the wildlife using them as habitat.

Ah well, they can use the new trees instead can't they.......

Sounds cheap, but I highly recommend seeing a portfolio of the contractors work prior to starting. You may also be able to arrange to go and see some of their jobs in person and better still talk to a few of their customers before committing. Any contractor worth their salt will want to show off their work, not hide it.
