Any idea what his is and whether I can take cuttings from it? Big bush that is flowering now and scented. DH hates it and wants it gone. I'd like to take cuttings and plant replacements elsewhere.

It's a viburnum, you can take hardwood cuttings now.

monkeysonthemoon · 06/01/2024 13:24

yes, viburnum, pretty flowers with a lovely scent, what does you dh dislike about it?

heldinadream · 06/01/2024 13:27

How can he hate a viburnum? Is it in the 'wrong place'? Do YOU like it OP?

BaleOfHay · 06/01/2024 13:27

Thanks both! He finds it dull for the rest of the year, doesn't like the scent and wants to put a path there. I might agree if. Can let it live on through cuttings....

Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn'.

How can anyone not like something so lovely?

AutumnFroglets · 06/01/2024 13:52

and wants to put a path there

Tell him it's the in thing to have wind-y paths and not straight. The path can go around it 😉

Also, usually when plants are highly scented it's to draw in the bees and other pollinators, which then bring in the birds. I also find if I hang seed feeders near mine the birds love hiding in it.

DH versus scent, bees, birds, happiness. Who will win? 😂

It's very valuable to wildlife to have such early flowering shrubs - can the path curve around it for the sake of environmental considerations?

I assumed you meant from OP’s punch, but on reflection you may just mean his sense of smell is defective.

Yes, of course. Who wouldn't love the smell of a viburnum in midwinter?

BaleOfHay · 08/01/2024 16:08

Unfortunately it's the access to us lawn from the farmyard for he lawn tractor etc, so a wide path is logical. There are 2 viburnums there so I might compromise losing one to keep the other. Agree re winter scent and flowers, I go to great lengths to try to mate that happen!!
