Hello

I have borders all around this first section of garden which have perennials planted. On the right hand side I have a tall evergreen tree, a tall choisya.and hydrangea which adds height, on the left side here in front of this wall I'm trying to also add height - what kind of tree could I add here that will fit in a narrow border, preferably evergreen, if it can't be evergreen then something very hardy. I'd like to steer the eye away from going straight to the shed if that makes sense

Thank you!

I' e got a Japanese flowering Cherry in a gap, it's a columnar shape, only about six feet to eight wide when full grown. Some thing like Kawasaki (no, not the motorbike!). I'll see if I can find the name later (Friday night wine imbibent precludes, LOl). It's not evergreen, but still nice in the winter as the branches are all thick and close. Lovely blossoms. Hardy. Also there is a columnar cypress that is evergreeen, but they are quite slow growing.

Laurel would work there. It's very hardy and ever green. I don't like it but had it to serve a similar purpose. it grows quite quickly as well if its in a good spot.

I do love Holly grown as a small tree. Evergreen, can be trimmed to the desired size/shape, and you can use the prunings for DIY Christmas decorations.

Taxus fastigiata aurea - golden yew. Upright growth, so would suit a narrow border, and evergreen.

Strawberry tree, Arbutus unedo is a lovely evergreen tree.

Fatsia Japonica.

@MereDintofPandiculation

that is absolutely gorgeous. the hours that must have taken! and to upkeep it!

I went to the link thinking it would be the gardener or garden designer's site but its a photographer - and what beautiful garden photographs!! Lovely. Carole Drake wherever you are I love your work.

@MereDintofPandiculation thank you for teaching me a new word too - I just had to look up pandiculation!

For anyone interested, it means:

Pandiculation is the involuntary stretching of the soft tissues, which occurs in most animal species and is associated with transitions between cyclic biological behaviors, especially the sleep-wake rhythm

generally defined as the act of stretching oneself and yawning, especially upon waking

I love me a bit of pandiculation!

A lovely big Acer would look beautiful in there.

Strawberry tree is a good suggestion for a small evergreen.

Olive is another option but only if it gets enough sun there.

Or a Photinia (a bush, but you can get lollipop shaped ones).

Holly/ilex? Again you can get lollipop shaped and some with small leaves rather than the classic Christmas ones.

A row of 3 pleached trees would cover up the shed nicely but is not cheap and rather a formal look.

Paramount plants is a useful site to look on, you can filter by evergreen, size etc.

In terms of fitting it into a narrow bed - we’ve had this challenge, buy pot grown, look at the pot size and check it will fit. Or you may need to lift some turf to make space and then replace once tree is in.

The OP wants something narrow because it is a narrow bed, and ideally evergreen, both of which requirements are the complete opposite of an acer.

We have Portuguese laurel planted alongside each other forming a hedge in a similar sort of spot. Grows fast and has a lovely small leaf like bay - and is evergreen.

Turkeyhen · 06/01/2024 14:21

An espalier apple or pear tree would look lovely there, although obviously not evergreen, but the structure would still screen the shed in winter.

Olive trees are very hardy but need good drainage and sun.

Like @SooperOuting I have some Portuguese laurels in my garden, they grow quite quickly, very shade tolerant, and can be clipped to whatever shape you like, however they are quite dark and heavy looking. Depends on the effect you want?

How much sun will it get and what sort of soil do you have OP?

Another vote for holly.

We moved a couple of years ago and luckily Holly appears to thrive in our soil so we have planted lots of holly bushes. Look forward to seeing them grow and producing an abundance of berries (last year was a corker).

What about Red Robin, looks lovely as a bush or small tree and it is also evergreen.

what type of soil do you have? have you fertilised the holly? anything you'd recommend?

chillichoclove · 07/01/2024 08:28

Where do you buy Holly? Any recommendations please

Cotswoldbee · 07/01/2024 14:27

We get all our hedging (including Holly) from Hedges Direct.

We are very heavy clay but encouraged by the amount of Holly in the surrounding area (wild and residential) we planted lots in our garden (mixed in with Beech, Hornbeam, Hawthorn, Elder, Oak etc).
No special planting, just put the plants in with compost & bonemeal and they seem to be thriving.
