Perennial Salvia, is it too late to cut back now?

I have purple and white flowers in the patio border that I planted in late May. Despite the dismal Summer they grew and grew. Anyway due to circumstances I was away from home from September until now. The flowers (that include salvia and other daisy like flowers) still actually have flowers on them! However it looks to me like they need a good haircut.

I can plant things and they generally grow, but I am not clued in as to when or whether to cut back in Autumn/Winter, but I suppose I should. I think I just left it a bit late now.

Do you think they will survive a good cutting back now, and if so how far down the plant should I make the cuts? Thanks.

I don,t cut anything back at this time of year. I just remove any soggy bits that are lying over other plants, to discourage mould or fungus, but I now leave everything til spring, as there is lots of cover there for insects and other wildlife, and seeds to offer food. It looks a bit untidy, but I can live with that. Then when the new shoots peek through I cut everything back.

Thanks @FizzingAda

I will leave them over Winter then. TBH the salvia still look great, even now, and I like the idea of cover for the wildlife too.
