What can I plant that will grow 10 to 15 feet tall in a pot?

New neighbours have reconfigured their toilet window. It's always overlooked our patio, but previous neighbours were quite old and for some reason this just didn't bother me. Now I can't unsee it. I want to grow something but it has to go in a pot, can be the biggest pot available though. It doesn't have to be absolutely as high as the window - when sitting on the patio our perspective means something shorter would obscure their window. When standing then the beauty of the plant would draw the eye away from the toilet window. Any recommendations?

I'm not there at the moment to measure, but I'm going to guess 5 ft. Eucalyptus is a good shout, how was yours accidental @ErrolTheDragon ?

Husband says we can't be sure it hasn't broken through the pot without heavy lifting from time to time. I don't want something that's meant to bring us some peace to actuality cause angst.

What surface will the pot be standing on?

There are some great ideas on here, i want to sit down and Google on a proper computer.

@LeefsPrings , at the moment there's a quince in earth. That would come out then p we'd have a think what kind of support the pot needed.

@KilgoreTrouts , reading the pots is a great idea.

I have some questions but need to decompress from the day. Just wanted to thank you so for these ideas!!!

@dudsville If you decide on bamboo, you will have to provide a hard surface such as a paving slab under the pot so the roots can't grow downwards into the soil.

I've planted a silver birch sapling in a huge pot. It had grown in my garden as is the parent tree. It's three years old and is about 8 feet now.

I saw a program where trees had been grown in pots and grew to 1/4 of their mature size.

You need a hefty big pot to do this. This is the cost as the pot alone will be £150-200.

It appealed to me as you can move it with you if you move house and it's an excellent screen from the neighbours.

Thanks again everyone. We read through the ideas here last night and we've decided definitely not to go for bamboo as it will just cause uneasiness. We like some of these ideas and have got proactive and have a gardener coming over to take a look and advise! Also about fencing, as they've replaced theirs and now we can see right into their kitchen. I'm looking forward to getting this done though as it's always been the one area of the garden that's a real let down.

There's a kind of sheeting you can buy that's some kind of plastic material and is frosted but still lets the light through. It's not even expensive. You have to get the kind that can resist UV otherwise it degrades in the sun quickly. You can get a carpenter to put it in a wooden frame to make a screen/fence and it still lets the light through. I'll try and find it and link to it. It's what I'm considering because I'm not keen on blocking light, but the area for me where I can see in their house is in the shade.

There's this one, it's too thin but just for the general idea I'll link it:

I can't edit but my original ideal was twin wall polycarbonate sheeting, but not the clear kind, obviously. If you search "twin wall polycarbonate fence" there's some ideas.

Does their bathroom window not have frosting or a curtain? Surely they can only peer onto your patio if their window is wide open? Have you told them that you can see them in their bathroom? You might find they install a curtain ASAP! 😆

Another option could be a black elder. They have interesting, black foliage and pretty, pink flowers. I made pink champagne from mine this year, otherwise you can use it just like a regular elder tree. Sambucus nigra Black Lace or Eva | Black Elder Shrubs For Sale (ornamental-trees.co.uk)

If its going against a wall, I'd get a large trough type pot, rather than a round one. Less likely to fall over and will take up less space.

NOT a eucalyptus - they are nigh impossible to control.
Iwould advocate bamboo (not one of the vigorous ones) in a strong pot and on a hard surface or propped on bricks. They survive whatever the weather throws at them

Alternatives are patio fruit trees, olive trees or fig trees - they are not as speedy as growing bamboo but more interesting.

plumtreebroke · 18/10/2023 16:12

Climber clematis montana or montana rubens or a couple to give different flowers. If you could put a frame (pergola, trellis) behind the pot for them to climb on. They grow very fast, hence the name and are also very pretty covered in flowers in the spring.

Pleached red robins.
