What are the squirrels burying ?

I keep finding, what looks like, a round nut shell and it often has a root type growth protruding from it. What is it ?

A nut?

DustyLee123 · 11/10/2023 06:53

It looks like a nut, but where would they get them from ? Are there nut bushes around that I’ve not noticed ? I find lots of them.

From trees - acorns, walnuts etc.

LaundryWoes · 11/10/2023 06:54

Plum? Cherry? Apricot? Acorn?
I don’t have any of those trees in my gardens but neighbours do and the squirrels bury the seeds in my garden.

TryAgainWithFeeling · 11/10/2023 06:56

Acorns, sweet chestnuts, horse chestnuts, hazelnuts, walnuts - all widespread in UK.

DustyLee123 · 11/10/2023 07:31

It’s a round shell, slightly smaller and lighter in colour than a walnut. The shell divides down the middle, and a root grows from in it.
im just trying to identify the shell.

Can you post a picture? Or find a similar image online?

gotomomo · 11/10/2023 07:34

Cob nuts? We have several trees around here

Potentially it is a walnut.

Sounds like a hazelnut.

anyoneanyoneanyone · 11/10/2023 11:30

acorn

INeedAnotherName · 11/10/2023 11:35

If it's small and round I would assume a hazelnut, aka cobnut.

You probably have a Common Walnut tree growing close by.

INeedAnotherName · 11/10/2023 17:14

Which country are you in? That might narrow it down. Also consider neighbours might be feeding the squirrels. Mine enjoy peanuts, monkey nuts, hazelnuts and shelled walnuts. Fortunately my neighbours enjoy watching them too 😂

MistyMooPup · 11/10/2023 17:15

Why do they bury them?

omnishambles · 11/10/2023 17:16

Mine are burying monkey nuts and then attempting to dig up all my bulbs <seethes>

Saisong · 11/10/2023 17:17

Because squirrels don't have pockets

bombastix · 11/10/2023 17:18

Mostly my crocus bulbs bloody annoying

MistyMooPup · 11/10/2023 17:18

They have big cheeks like pockets

Thought it was so they had access to food through the winter?? I always thought that was common knowledge but now wondering if I made that up.

INeedAnotherName · 11/10/2023 17:21

I think i would still prefer pockets to big cheeks...

Nah, that's hamsters

There's a theory that most woodland in the UK comes from Squirrels burying nuts and then forgetting them.
