Apple tree

Hello

We have two dwarf apple trees brought from a local nursery. We have a long narrow garden, I currently have one by the fence 60cm from the fence planted in the border and the other in a pot. My question is: are they able to be planted in borders by the fence, is that enough spacing etc?

Thanks

There should be a plant tag attached that says the spread but I found this.

^Dwarfing Apple Trees - Rootstock M9Dwarfing equals a tree of about 8’ in height; the spread is usually the same. This tree is often preferred over more vigorous stocks for commercial orchard planting these days, as it is precocious and heavy cropping and can be planted at higher density. It’s great for smallish gardens too, lawn planting, or for a larger container. Crops early in life; plant trees 8’ apart. No ladders are needed to harvest the weighty crop.
Crops can be expected 1-2 years after planting.^

FWIW I would say plant as far away from the fence as possible. My own apple tree (not dwarf) is far too close to the fence. I prune it every year but it pains me to have to chop so much off so it doesn’t risk annoying the neighbours.

I don’t know how old your apple tree is. If it is young enough you can train it as an espalier, ie branches running horizontally along the fence. Though I think a more vigorous rootstock is recommended.
