I'm about to have a deep new bed and I'd like to add 6 new shrub roses in circular plant supports. The site is shady in the morning but full sun from about 1030. I'd like the plants to be healthy, fragrant, long flowering and easy. I've already got (and love) Emily Bronte and Gertrude Jekyll - what else would you suggest?

Send for a David Austin rose catalogue. Loads of lovely pictures for armchair gardening! The website is very helpful and informative about size, scent etc. My most successful plantings have been Gabriel Oak, Eustacia Vye, Lady of Shallot, Olivia Rose and, most floriferous of all, Roald Dahl. I also planted Boscobel which is lovely but less free flowering. I've also got Strawberry Hill which was a present from a friend. It's flowered all summer and still has plenty of flowers. It's a small climber but I've pruned it so it's a large shrub. Enjoy choosing!

I hate the lot of you now. I’ve just ordered the David Austin handbook, and am struggling to tear myself away from the website. This is doing to be the horticultural equivalent of a trip to Wilko isn’t it….. i only went for one thing…. 🤣

Queen of Sweden is beautiful - the shape is like a water lily.

This year I planted A Whiter Shade of Pale. It has large pale pink blooms and smells absolutely wonderful. Also looks very healthy.

David Austin have a code, GREEN23, that is supposed to give 15% off bare root roses valid to November. I've got my eye on Margaret Merril, a shrub very similar to A Whiter Shade of Pale, very fragrant.

Pierre de Ronsard (Éden Rose) is utterly gorgeous and a great climber. I know little about gardening, but saw these at a clients property and was bowled over by them!

Queen of Sweden is a good one, soft pink, nicely scented and quite upright. It also did best in the dry summer we had and wet winter.

I bought ten Kew Gardens today. I think the scent is fairly light but they’re long flowering

Does any one have recommendations for roses other than DA roses?
I am bit disappointed with David Austin roses. I've had them for three years now and although they are beautiful and their scent is lovely, they seem to be too delicate compared to my other roses.
I have several DA roses including Gertrude Jekyll, Olivia Austin and Claire Austin, Boscobel, Queen of Sweden but the blooms seem to droop, especially GJ and Olivia Austin.
I think I prefer stronger and more robust rose bushes 😀

David Austin do sell A Whiter Shade of Pale but I bought it from a local rose grower here in Devon.
