Indoor plant flies

Hi MNs

I have lots of indoor plants and have done for years but for the first time, I am struggling with flies and worms!

The flies are incessant - I feel like I have tried everything- cinnamon, upside down matchsticks, watering only from the bottom, fly tape, a bug zapper - but they are still very much here!

My fig tree in in a large pot and every time I water it, small worms start jumping out - it is so strange. We find them shrivelled up the next morning on the floor if we haven't managed to rescue them. It's a bit grim!

Any tips would be welcomed!
Thank you very much!

I have loads of indoor plants and not aware of flies?!

roughedges · 24/09/2023 09:36

@Iwillpassthanks they are tiny fungus gnats apparently!

I'm struggling with flies too op, not the worms though. It's only this year that I've had them and no idea why!

roughedges · 24/09/2023 10:01

@Teapleasebobb ditto! So strange - wonder if it might be something to do with the wet summer?

Fungus gnats - they are hatching out from larvae in the soil. Take any affected plants, remove as much soil as you can, and any translucent larvae. Repot in fresh soil, cover with a layer of grit to deter the females from laying.

Worms - I think we need some pictures and measurements

I did read that I could be watering too much, but I've cut down on how much I water and they're still there, can't cut down any more or they'll wither

Nematodes are the only thing that worked for me with fungus gnats. I wish I had just got them first, and not wasted a lot of time on other methods!

Cut down on watering.
Top the soil with grit.
The life cycle is fairly short so that should sort it fairly quickly.
